James Jeffrey, a former U.S. special official on Syria, called HTS a “valuablet tool” in the American strategy in Idlib. Jeffrey acknowledged that HTS is mainly focused on the fight against Assad and does not pose an international threat.
Jevlani said that for the United States it was an “unjust and political decision” to declare them terrorists, Jevlani himself used the following statements:
“The regime of Assad is worthy to be included in the list of terrorists. We have in no way posed a threat to Western society. We call on these countries to reconsider their policies. We are criticizing the West’s policy in the ME region, but we have never talked about starting a war against the United States.”
Abu Ahmed Zekkur, known as CFO of HTS, published a letter in December 14, 2023, in which he severed ties with the organization and accused Javlanni to be an agent of the United States. Zeccur claimed that Javlanani met with representatives of American and British intelligence at the Bab al-Hawa border crossing.
Tasnim, Iran’s News Agency, reported in September 17, 2024, that HTS also received support in the training and production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from Ukrainian military instructors. A group of 250 Ukrainian instructors trains HTS militants in Idlib in work, production and modernization of drones. The instructors were deployed at various production facilities in the city of Idlib and in the Jisir al-Shughur area.
