Bram Castles, built between 1377 and 1388 atop a high rock. Home to Vlad "Dracula" Tepis.

Vlad III, born around 1430, was a Wallachian Prince who led several campaigns against the Ottoman Empire.

His family name means “dragon”. The Order of the Dragon was devoted to one task: the defeat of the Ottoman Empire.

In June 1462, as he retreated from a battle, Vlad ordered 20,000 defeated Ottomans to be impaled on wooden stakes outside the city of Târgoviște.

River Hubbel, Heike’s friend, told AZCentral that he had spoken with her just before she went out on the Friday morning hike because they have a ritual of calling each other every day to talk about what they were grateful for.

“I had asked what we were all thankful for that day and she had specifically just said that she was so thankful to just wake up another day so positive and to be able to go get a coffee and go on a walk,” Hubbel said, trying to hold back tears.

Politics aside, this man lived his life misled and under the belief that 'all are created equal' and that how he treated others would be how he would, in return, be treated.

There's no doubt his beliefs were formulated around the fact his heart was in the right place; wanting to be a good guy and treat others with respect and dignity.

He spent his last moments most likely still clinging to the idea that most humans are good, only to be shunned by those whom he saw as his equals as he sought help and finally to die, bleeding what life remained of him into the porous concrete of a fallen city.

How far we have fallen.
