Spain to Be Hit by DANA: Prepare for Thunderstorms and Mud Rains! An isolated depression at altitude (DANA) has formed over the Atlantic, west of Galicia, and is set to affect central Spain by Thursday.
At about 5500 meters, temperatures have dropped to -20 to -22 °C, creating a powerful thermal contrast that will result in heavy showers and thunderstorms in the coming hours.
On Thursday night and Friday morning, DANA will move northeastward, cross the Pyrenees, and end up over France, causing additional instability in the Mediterranean regions. This will bring thunderstorms and rain with sand, so there's no need to wash your car or hang laundry outside!
Tomorrow morning, residents of the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands will see skies covered in clouds and dust. Dry thunderstorms are possible in Murcia, Valencia, and Catalonia, with rain potentially evaporating before it reaches the ground, but whatever falls will be muddy.
Wednesday afternoon, localized heavy thunderstorms are possible again in Murcia and Valencia. Another wave of dry thunderstorms with mud showers is expected from Thursday night into Friday, especially on the southeast coast and the Balearic Islands.
AEMET has already issued yellow warnings for northern Castellón due to possible rainfall of up to 20 l/m² in an hour. Unexpected showers are also possible in other parts of Valencia.
