✏️ Moral stories ✏️
🍂The Cold Planet

Thousands of miles from Earth is the planet of Fliptune. Fliptune gets no sun, and is therefore always cold and dark. It is inhabited by creatures who resemble dinosaurs. These creatures use torches to see. One day, a young Fliptunese called Neila put the wrong batteries in his torch. Suddenly the torch lit up and its bright golden rays travelled through the universe and touched planet Earth. The light hit a boy named Bamby. Even before Bamby could understand what was happening, he got sucked into the light and went higher and higher and landed on Fliptune. Neila watched wild-eyed. He had never seen a human before. Bamby was equally surprised. “It’s so cold and dark here,” said Bamby. “We don’t get the sun,” lamented Neila “I can get the sun for you,” replied Bamby. He lit the torch once again and helped Bamby return to Earth. Bamby took out a huge mirror and reflected the sun’s rays towards Fliptune. Now Fliptune was never dark and cold again.

✏️ Conversation of the Day ✏️
📚 Doctor's Dream

🇺🇸Todd: So hey Josh, how you doing?

🇺🇸Josh: I’m good. How are you?

Todd: Oh, doing pretty good. Josh, how old are you?

Josh: I am 17.

Todd: 17, so you're kind of at the start of your life.

Josh: Yeah, I guess you could say that.

Todd: That’s pretty awesome. So what do you want to be in the future? Like what are your plans?

Josh: Well obviously, I want to go to college and after college I’ve thought about going to optometry school to become an eye doctor.

Todd: Wow! An eye doctor.

Josh: Yeah.

Todd: What is it that made you would want to be an eye doctor?

Josh: I guess it kind of started when I was really little and I got glasses for the first time. And when I got those glasses, you know I put them on and I really needed them. And no one found out that I needed them very quickly and so when I first put them on, I looked around and everything was so much crisper. And I think my mom always says that when I looked around I said, “Mom, I can see the trees and I can see all the branches. And it’s so cool”. And she didn’t realize how badly I needed them until right then, but that moment I always will remember that. And then the other reason is that my cousin has had lots of eye problems and ended up going blind in one eye. And I remember asking him to go to a 3D movie with me one time and he said, “I can’t because you need two eyes to see 3D.” And I loved 3D movies at that point so I felt so bad for him that he couldn’t see a 3D movie. And that was ... that kind of made me feel like I needed to fix people’s eyes.

Todd: That’s a great story. So you've wanted to be an eye doctor for some time?

Josh: Yeah, ever since I was basically six.

Todd: So are you doing things right now to help prepare yourself to get into college and become a doctor?

Josh: Absolutely, just I’ve researched the classes that I should take to be able to make it that far. And so I’m taking those classes and doing everything I can to get in that direction.

Todd: Oh wow, that’s great.

Josh: Looking at schools and everything.

Todd: Now, I think you mentioned that you’re actually taking online classes through MIT? And you're in high school.

Josh: Yeah, that’s right. I’m just looking at them, they’re free to do so you can watch the videos whichever ones you want. And they’re really interesting, the professors at MIT are really cool.

Todd: Well that’s great! So your parents must be really proud?

Josh: I don’t know about that, I hope so.

Todd: So do you have a fallback plan like if you were not able to become an eye doctor, would there be another profession you would be interested in?

Josh: Recently I’ve been looking at biomedical engineering as well.

Todd: What is that, biomedical engineering?

Josh: Biomedical engineering, well, it’s engineering like anything, so building things but with the biomedical part means that you build things that interact with the human body. So for example, the new Google’s goggles or glasses, those are actually developed partly by biomedical engineers who just help to create the fit and make sure they wouldn’t cause headaches or injuries or anything like that. And then also heart stents or any medical device like a heart rate monitor or a prosthetic, those are all made by biomedical engineers.

Todd: Oh wow, that sounds like an interesting field.

Josh: Yeah, for sure.

Todd: Well, good luck with your career, I hope it all pans out.

Josh: Thank you.

▪️Oddly enough/ put in

Oddly enough, when I was traveling, I usually put in more than 40 hours a week.

You can use the phrase 'oddly enough' to introduce something that is strange or unexpected. Here, 'put in' hours means to work. Notice the following:

▫️Oddly enough, I was just going to send you an email when you called me.

▫️How many hours did you put in this week?

▪️Conducive

You have to look for places that are conducive to working.

A situation that is 'conducive' to working is helpful or makes working easier, like a quiet place where you could concentrate. Notice the following:

▫️Having all this junk food around the house isn't conducive to dieting.

▫️My house isn't very conducive to studying, because it is so loud.

▪️Emphasize

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a good chair.

When you 'emphasize' something, you stress or discuss its significance. Notice the following:

▫️Today, in class, she emphasized the important things to study for the exam.

▫️I need to emphasize that it is very important to stay quiet.

▪️Short-term housing

Usually you want to get short-term housing.

'Short-term housing' would be an apartment, room or house where you stay for a short time but longer than a normal hotel stay.  Notice the following:

▫️We prefer to stay in short-term housing instead of a hotel.

▫️Most people stay here for short-term housing, but he has lived here for years.

▪️Wireless

In Vietnam, you can work wireless from the beach.

You are working 'wireless' on your computer when you are using the internet, and you don't have to be connected to anything with cables. Notice the following:

▫️This is the best cafe, because they have really fast wireless internet.

▫️I remember when wireless phones were an exciting thing to have in your house.

✏️ Conversation of the Day ✏️
🎧Work on the Go

Todd continues talking about his daily life as a web creator living on the road.

🇬🇧Julia: So talking of working overseas, how does that work? How do set that kind of lifestyle up?

🇺🇸Todd: You mean like the nomadic lifestyle?

Julia: Yeah, yeah, when you want to travel and just be free and how do you go about that?

Todd: Well, it's interesting. Like I think people get the wrong idea about working that type of life, being like a nomad. First of all you're actually not a tourist and in a lot of ways you're not a traveler. Like I actually worked and oddly enough, you know when I was just traveling and just living from city to city and working digitally from my computer, I put inmore than forty hours a week. I actually probably put in maybe fifty or sixty because I had so much time. I had nothing to do usually so I would work usually five to six days a week and usually ten hours a day. So the first thing is that you work a lot and because you work a lot, you have to look for places that are conductive, conducive I'm sorry, that are conducive for working. So the first thing you need is you need a hotel or like usually a short term apartment because it's usually best to stay in one place for about a month and you need a place that has a good desk and a good chair. I cannot emphasizethe importance of a good chair. A good chair is actually so much more important than cable TV or a nice bed or a pool or whatever because you're going to sit in the chair all the time. So when I would travel, I would go to a hotel and the first thing I would ask is can I see...

Julia: The chair?

Todd: Can I see the chairs in the room and if I didn't like the chair, I'd say like look I'm going to be here for two weeks I'll stay but you gotta get me like a nice chair. So that was one thing. So usually you want to get like a short-term housing. You look on the internet, you know, two weeks at a time and usually you can find something cheap. You usually want to be in a major city because you need to have internet and that is the most important thing. You'd be surprised at what countries have fast internet. Like Vietnam really fast and you can work wireless from the beach. I used to sit on the beach with my laptop and have high speed wireless in some of the cities in Vietnam.

Julia: Wow.

Todd: Yeah, it's amazing. You know, Thailand, Bangkok, it's surprisingly not that fast. So Bangkok wasn't that fast but if you went to a smaller city like Chiang Mai, the internet was really fast.

▪️Nomad

For a year I was actually a nomad.

A 'nomad' is a person who has no permanent place to live and travels from one place to another with all of his things. Notice the following:

▫️After being a nomad for the past few years, it will be nice to finally unpack my suitcases.

▫️Life as a nomad can be really exciting sometimes and exhausting others.

▪️Itinerary

I would choose my own itinerary and my destination.

An 'itinerary' is a detailed plan for a trip. Notice the following:

▫️What is your travel itinerary?

▫️Please send me a copy of your itinerary, so I know when to pick you up.

▪️Crave

After a while, you really crave social interaction.

You 'crave' something when you really want it. Notice the following:

▫️After a few days with her, you'll be craving silence.

▫️I am really craving pizza right now.

▪️Report to

I had no one to report to and no schedule.

You usually 'report to' someone, like a boss, and tell him what you have been working on. Notice the following:

▫️While you are traveling, we expect you to report to us at least twice a week.

▫️He has so many bosses that he never knows who to report to.

▪️Paralyzing

Total freedom was actually almost paralyzing.

When something is 'paralyzing,' it makes you feel like you cannot move or act. Notice the following:

▫️Rock climbing would be a very paralyzing sport for me.

▫️I would be paralyzed with fear in a situation like that.

▪️Abyss

It was like standing on the edge of an abyss and looking down.

An 'abyss' is like a very deep canyon, where you cannot see the bottom. Notice the following:

▫️Falling off the trail here would mean tumbling into an abyss.

▫️His house sits on the edge of an abyss.

▪️Normalcy

I finally realized that I wanted normalcy again.

'Normalcy' is a general feeling of being normal and having a normal routine. Notice the following:

▫️There has been so much going on for me at home that it will be really nice to finally have some normalcy.

▫️One of the best ways to create a schedule for a newborn is to have normalcy in your life.

▪️Value

Everyone would benefit from trying it and working out what they really value.

What you 'value' is what is important to you. Notice the following:

▫️He values money too much.

▫️Traveling will help you see how much you really value your family.

▪️Not all it's cracked up to be

I'm not saying it's not worth it; it's just not all it's cracked up to be.

When something is 'not all it's cracked up to be,' it doesn't live up to your expectations. It's not what you expected, and you are disappointed. Notice the following:

▫️He was very excited when he got his new job, but he soon found out it wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

▫️Living in tropical areas isn't all it's cracked up to be.

✏️ Conversation of the Day ✏️
📚 working from abroad

🇬🇧Julia: OK, so we've talked about freelancing your skills and living and working abroad. Have you ever done that? Have you ever lived and worked in a...

🇺🇸Todd: Like digitally, just like a kind of nomad?

Julia: Yeah.

Todd: Yeah, I did. I did it for a year. I was actually a nomad. I lived in five different countries and I did all my work online. I mainly was just doing web stuff but it was an interesting experience. I mean I had never, I thought it would be the perfect life and when I told people what I was going to do, everybody said that's amazing. You know, I mean basically I said that I was gonna just travel the world and I would just work from whatever city I was in. I would choose my own itinerary and my own destination and I would work when I wanted to and, yeah, I did it for ten months.

Julia: And then why did you quit?

Todd: Well, I think you referenced it earlier. It actually became incredibly lonely. I was surprised how lonely I became. I would meet people but you would always meet people as a tourist and you didn't have family and you didn't have your social network. You didn't have people that you would see every day at work.

Julia: No workmates?

Todd: Right. You got no workmates, no-one to go out and have a drink with and after a while you really crave like social interaction and not always being the stranger, not always being the new person, like people that know your name and yeah, so after a while I gave it up. I remember the big thing that changed is one day I was in my hotel room, actually it was a little apartment, and I realised I had nowhere to go, I had no-one to see and I can go anywhere in the world. I had complete freedom. I could go to the airport and buy a ticket to Paris and go to Paris that day or I can go to Buenos Aires or Sydney. I could have gone anywhere in the world. There was nothing to stop me. No schedule, no appointments, no-one to report to and it was actually kind of frightening. Like it was almost paralyzing.

Julia: It's like standing on the edge of an abyss looking down.

Todd: It was. It was like, you know, I realized I wanted normalcy again. I wanted to have a schedule. I wanted to, you know, have the norm that I had before so I went back to teaching at university and now in my university job I have a lot of time to travel in between but just living around the world going from place to place, yeah, it wasn't so great.

Julia: Well, I think it's great that you had the chance to explore this option. I'm sure everyone would benefit maybe from trying it and then working out what it is they really value because I'm sure we all think wow freedom, absolute freedom, isn't that like the ultimate goal but then when you have it, you realize well actually no, some of those constraints that I had were quite good.

Todd: Right.

Julia: They gave me a sense of being or they give structure to my life or meaning to my life.

Todd: Totally, totally and actually now that I've done it, I would do it again. I would know how to do it right. I would do it different than I did it before so, yeah, I learned. I'm not saying it's not worth it, I'm just saying it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Julia: No, and I guess ten months is a long time maybe that's the only thing, enough of a...

Todd: Exactly.

Julia: But it sounds cool though. I can see the attraction definitely.
