27 years ago began Operation Storm, an offensive of the Croatian army and police on the Republic of Serbian Krajina. The Serb civilians fearing reprisals and terror from the coming troops packed up their belongings and fled their ancestral homes in Kordun, Lika and Dalmatia. Over 200.000 Serbs fled the Operation while 742 RSK soldiers died and 1.196 civilians perished in the chaos or were declared missing.
Operation Storm is celebrated in Croatia tomorrow as the day when the "victorious" Croatian troops entered Knin, which had by then become a ghost town of only a few people. The area that was once Serbian Krajina still remains empty to this day, and destroyed houses of Serbs still dot the land.
