Buon Ferragosto A Tutti
On the 15th of August, Italy Celebrates Ferragosto. It’s origins come from the Festival of Augustus, who made the 1st of August a day of rest after weeks of hard work on the agricultural sector.
It would become a custom for workers to wish their employers a “Buon Ferragosto” and receive money in return.
In the Papal States this would become law, and the Catholic Church would move it to the 15th of August to align with Assumption of Mary.
Mussolini used this festivity to allow the lower classes to visit the great cultural sites of Italy for 1-3 days, in a time where only the rich could afford it. From August 14th to 16th, Train tickets were made very cheap to facilitate the travel of the working class.
