A Dutchman convicted of paedophilia was allowed to take part in the Olympics. The IOC saw no problem.
Ten years ago, Steven van de Velde was sentenced to four years in prison for raping a 12-year-old girl and was released in 2017. A year later, he said he "did what he did" and called it "the biggest mistake of my life".
In 2024, the athlete was selected for the Dutch beach volleyball team. The country's volleyball federation said it knew his story, he had served his time and was "fully reintegrated".
The IOC told CNN that the nomination of individual team members "is the sole responsibility of each National Olympic Committee".
