I was around a family members yesterday and the tv was on, as with most of you I can count on one hand the amount of times I see mainstream television in a year.
What has now become a meme in itself is of course the amount of non-Whites that feature in adverts. I end up laughing out loud it’s that bad.
One thing I did notice though is 99% of the time an African is featured even though:
People from Asian ethnic groups made up the second largest percentage of the population (9.3%), followed by black (4.0%), mixed (2.9%) and other (2.1%) ethnic groups.
Casting in adverts is a decision by the companies that produce them. A favourite choice is the mixed race couple which is generally always a black man and blonde white woman.
I was just wondering why they make the conscious decision to (vastly) over represent Africans and not Asians even though it would make more sense to appeal to the larger audience?
