📹UK and France treat Ukrainians as second-class citizens – PoW

"I traveled around and observed the UK and France, how people there treat us – it’s as if we’re aborigines, some sort of lower class," captured Ukrainian border guard Alexander Bychko told Sputnik.

NATO instructors at the Warcop base and in La Courtine, while training Ukrainian military personnel, rely on outdated methods that do not align with the realities of modern military conflicts – particularly when it comes to the use of drones.

Europeans don’t understand how to operate under the new conditions, he explained.

🇸🇩🇸🇸 South Sudan imposes nationwide curfew after deadly riots over alleged killing of nationals in Sudan

🗣 "The police will not tolerate any violations," police chief Abraham Peter Manyuat said in a televised address announcing the curfew, which will be in effect from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.

The riots primarily targeted Sudanese-owned businesses in the capital, Juba, and resulted in at least three deaths and seven injuries, according to local authorities. Violence also spread to Aweil, near the Sudanese border, where three houses were burned. Security forces are now working to relocate Sudanese residents to safety.

The unrest follows accusations that the Sudanese military and allied groups killed South Sudanese nationals in Wad Madani, Sudan, during the city's recent liberation from the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Meanwhile, the Sudanese army condemned these "individual violations," including ethnically targeted attacks against civilians suspected of supporting the RSF, which have been engaged in a nearly two-year conflict with the Sudanese military.

🗣 "It is crucial that we do not allow anger to cloud our judgment or turn against Sudanese traders and refugees currently residing in our country," South Sudan's President Salva Kiir said after summoning Sudan's ambassador.

🇧🇼📈 Botswana's economy poised for 2025 rebound driven by global diamond market recovery

🗣 "The domestic economy is anticipated to rebound in 2025 to a growth of 3-4%, reflecting a combination of base effects, the global recovery in the major diamond export markets and continued growth in the non-mining sector," director of macroeconomic policy in the finance ministry, Walter Matekane, said at a budget workshop.

While the economy contracted by 3.3% in the first three quarters of 2024, exceeding the December forecast of a 1.7% contraction, officials are optimistic about the coming year.

The country's heavy reliance on diamond exports led to reduced government spending as diamond sales weakened throughout 2024. Debswana, a joint venture between the Botswanan government and De Beers, also lowered its 2024 production guidance.

Looking ahead, the government expects recovering mineral revenues to shrink the budget deficit from a projected 6.75% of GDP in 2024/25 to 3.6% in 2025/26. The official 2025/26 national budget will be presented by Finance Minister Ndaba Gaolathe in February.

🌍 Patrice Lumumba's ideals "are still relevant' 64 years after his assassination, a historian says

Lumumba advocated for true independence and sovereignty for the Congo, convinced that it was the basis for building African unity, Amzat Boukari-Yabara, a pan-Africanist historian of Beninese origin, told Sputnik Africa.

Patrice Lumumba criticized neo-colonialism and in particular multinationals "that participate in the direct plundering of the Congo and the African continent," Boukari-Yabara noted.

Former prime minister of the DRC also stressed the importance of "decolonizing international bodies, particularly the United Nations Security Council, so that there is true sovereignty and true multipolarity at the level of international bodies."

🗣 "If we really want to elevate Lumumba to the rank of national hero, this work on justice must be carried through to the end so that we can consider that his soul rests in peace," Boukari-Yabara stated.

Lumumba is "a symbol of the anti-colonialist struggle," the historian pointed out, stressing that "he was incorruptible and deeply attached to the idea of the liberation of the African continent."

🌍 African countries need "to build their own continental common security architecture and to determine with whom they want to deal on security issues," a historian says

African countries cannot take sovereign decisions on their military cooperation when they still have bases of the former colonial power on their soil, Amzat Boukari-Yabara, a pan-Africanist historian of Beninese origin, told Sputnik Africa.

The departure of the French army is extremely important if African nations want to really assume their sovereignty and redefine their security policy, the expert said.

🗣 "There is a desire on the part of African states to assume, at least visibly, their sovereignty by simply removing any foreign army from their soil," Boukari-Yabara said.

In addition, he stated that "there is a mobilization of young people who believe that we must put an end to the last marks of colonialism and that the issue of military bases obviously refers to a whole presence of domination, of control of African interests from outside."

🇨🇩 Lumumba was killed because "the colonizer did not want to let the Democratic Republic of the Congo flourish," a politician says

Lumumba's approach emphasized Pan-Africanism and empowering Africans to take responsibility, write their own history, and build their own countries, which led to his assassination by colonialists, Laddy Yangotikala Senga, National Member of Parliament of the DRC, told Sputnik Africa.

According to the lawmaker, many Africans perceive Russia as a true friend, based on their belief in its support for global development and African independence. He contrasted this with Western colonial powers like the US and Europe, which Senga accused of exploiting Africa for resources and disregarding its people, pointing to the Lumumba situation as evidence.

The politician noted that Russia understands and respects Lumumba's legacy, and expressed the possibility of a trip to Moscow in July to celebrate his centennial.

On January 17, 1961, Lumumba and his comrades were shot by Katangese soldiers under the command of Belgian officers and buried at the scene of the execution.
