🇨🇩 Lumumba was killed because "the colonizer did not want to let the Democratic Republic of the Congo flourish," a politician says
Lumumba's approach emphasized Pan-Africanism and empowering Africans to take responsibility, write their own history, and build their own countries, which led to his assassination by colonialists,
Laddy Yangotikala Senga, National Member of Parliament of the DRC, told
Sputnik Africa.According to the lawmaker, many Africans perceive Russia as a true friend, based on their belief in its support for global development and African independence. He contrasted this with Western colonial powers like the US and Europe, which Senga accused of exploiting Africa for resources and disregarding its people, pointing to the Lumumba situation as evidence.
The politician noted that Russia understands and respects Lumumba's legacy, and expressed the possibility of a trip to Moscow in July to celebrate his centennial.
On January 17, 1961, Lumumba and his comrades were shot by Katangese soldiers under the command of Belgian officers and buried at the scene of the execution.
