MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE - Tear Gas Fired at Protesters in Mozambique CapitalA massive demonstration in Maputo, Mozambique, turned violent on Thursday as police fired tear gas to disperse protesters denouncing alleged election fraud. The protesters, mostly young men, were calling for action against the governing Frelimo party, which was declared the winner of last month's election, extending its nearly five-decade rule.
The demonstration, the largest yet against the Frelimo party, saw protesters barricade streets with burning tyres and wave homemade signs in support of opposition leader Venancio Mondlane. Mondlane has claimed the October 9 election was rigged and had called for a week of protests, culminating in Thursday's event.
As the protesters marched towards the city centre, police attempted to stop them, resorting to tear gas in an effort to disperse the crowd.
