The U.N. atomic watchdog's 35-nation Board of Governors passed a resolution on Thursday again ordering Iran to urgently improve cooperation with the agency and requesting a "comprehensive" report aimed at pressuring Iran into fresh nuclear talks.
China, Russia and Burkina Faso voted against the text, diplomats in the meeting said. Nineteen countries voted in favour and 12 abstained.
Western powers hope that report, due by spring 2025, will pressure Iran into negotiations on fresh restrictions on its nuclear activities. The Resolution could also bring certain sanctions on Iran that were lifted earlier back into place.
In a joint statement with Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) stated that the decision by the IAEA Board of Governors was made under pressure from the European Troika, which includes Britain, Germany, and France, and the United States, describing this approach as "destructive."
The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammad Eslami, has directed the activation of a new and advanced series of centrifuges in response to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors' resolution.
