Destroy the short term dopamine feedback loop.

“Be ready so you don’t have to get ready!”

So many people assume they will simply rise to occasion, but never train in any form of self defense. Never in gym getting stronger, or putting in the dry/live fire time with their carry gun. They will “turn that switch” and handle whatever is thrown at their way. Sadly, it more than likely not going to turn out in their favor.

We don’t rise to our highest level of training and preparedness in a high stress, violent situation. We drop down to our highest level of proficiency. If you are not regularly training your body to move, shoot, and fight. You’re not going to perform at the level you think you are, and it may cost your life.

My decision making process when assessing a task.

Are there rules and boundaries?

Are they real or are they perceived?

If they are real. What happens if I break them?

Dry Fire Training.

If you carry a gun for a living or as a means of self defense. Are you dry firing between live fire training?

I have been dry firing daily for roughly 10-15 minutes from my AIWB holster. Nothing fancy, just working on clearing clothing and drawing my pistol. Plus, reloads from a magazine in my pocket. The goal of improving speed and efficiency in my presentation.

If you carry a gun it is essential your train with that gun. I am fortunate to work on range so I get train live fire regularly, but dry firing daily has only improved my speed and accuracy. Shooting is a perishable skill, so take some time to keep proficient.

Once a week, 20-30 minutes, work your prevention, reloads, and move around a little bit.

Horse. Saddle. Self.

Take care of the things that take care of you before seeking comfort.

If you’re looking for universal acceptance, keep looking my friend. You will never please everyone and if you do, you have no real opinion of your own.

It’s odd being a man in modern society. We refrain from violence in the name of being civilized, as we work in jobs under other men that we could kill in nature. Men are not meant to be shoved into cubicles taking orders from men with only perceived authority. Commuting hours each day to jobs we hate, while only getting a few hours a day with family to be social.

The long term psychological damage is clearly shown in the insanely high number of male suicide rates. We as men are killing our selves more and more each year. Sadly, not enough people talking about it.

Stop suffering in silence. Reach out for help. Talk to your friends and family. Get professional help if you’re thinking about taking your life.

“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”
-Henry David Thoreau

I see a significant amount of people within our society lacking a desire to master a skill or craft. All want the benefits and rewards of hard work, but few want to put in the time or effort. Instant gratification culture always in search of the next dopamine hit without feeling the pain of failing.

The real path to mastering your chosen craft requires dedicating immense amounts of time. Years, not hours or days, spent in pursuit of perfecting small pieces of the craft. It is mastering the small intricate details so you not only understand how to complete steps one through five, but understand the why of the steps.

Take a look at your chosen profession, artistic endeavor, or passionate hobby. Find the all the steps required to reach the desired outcome, and hyper focus on one or two. Don’t try to master everything at once, but a few small details. You will find that as you spend time working on the little things. The big things start to fall into place.

Short term pleasure will always lead to long term unfulfillment.

Begin the morning by saying to thyself, I shall meet with the busy-body, the ungrateful, arrogant, deceitful, envious, unsocial.

-Marcus Aurelius

Mentally prepare yourself for the environment in which operate every day. Don’t be shocked by the worst of our society when they act like the worst of our society. It is not setting the bar low in your expectations of your fellow man. It is simply not allowing the worst of us to run your peace.

It's impossible to be good at something you neglect to practice.

If you’re interested in finding a better way to train firearms and tactics. “Building Shooters” has been an interesting read and reshaped the way I have been looking at training, and how our brains process new information.

The first six chapters are heavy on neuroscience, and Chapter Seven it’s gets more into how to develop training programs.

“Walk Silently. Act Violently.”

“Man is not worried by real problems so much as by his imagined anxieties about real problems.” -Epictetus

Self induced worry and anxiety will kill your mindset faster than the actual problem. Our brains don’t distinguish between being attacked by a tiger and being late on your bills. The stress response is the exact same for both situations.

Do not be your own worst enemy by overthinking a problem with made up possibilities. You will only create a bunch of fantasy scenarios, none of which will help you solve the problem.

Find the problem, fix the problem.

I deleted the last post about my new job as an instructor. I came off too preachy and sounded a lot like I was just complaining about a younger generation.

It is frustrating to watch young men and women given a great opportunity to start a new, travel extensively around the work, and make significant money. All to throw it away simply because they can’t be disciplined enough to put in the work. The question is who do we blame? The individual? The parents? The education system? The government? Maybe, it is “All the Above.”, and they were doomed from the start.

Life is hard and great opportunities don’t come around often. If you come across a chance to better yourself. Take it. Lean into that opportunity.

Be an asset.

Do not be the reason somebody does not make it home to their loved ones. If you are unwilling to prepare for the mental and physical rigors of a violent profession on a daily basis. You are a risk and liability to those who depend on your preparedness.

If you haven’t already noticed the theme in my recent posts. Time management has been a heavy focus of mine lately. Building a better daily routine to accommodate family, work, jiu jitsu and strength training. All time consuming endeavors if done correctly.

My goal has been to trim the fat off my life. Cut away the unnecessary and time stealing activities. Let me be clear that these are not sacrifices. We are talking about things that in your death bed will be meaningless. If I don’t get to binge watch a Netflix series every night. I am pretty confident that I won’t die or miss out on too much.

You will find that if you dedicate time to pursuing only things that make your life better. Your life will get better. It’s weird how that works out in that way.

I watched an interview with a guy who did the CrossFit “Murph” workout everyday for a year. He was a regular guy, had a wife, couple of kids, and a job but decided to dedicate an hour a day into grinding out this workout.

You know what one of his biggest takeaways was after a year? How much unnecessary time he was wasting on unimportant things. He had to do this hour long brutal workout everyday, and spend time with his family. He still wanted to be a husband and father, so cut out the insignificant activities.

Daily Routine

I am not one of those guys that pushes that hardcore daily routine schedule. The “Wake up before you go to bed” social media snake oil that targets men looking for a way to improve their life. It predatory behavior that isn’t followed by the people pushing it down our throats.

You have to find a schedule that works for your life, family schedule, work commitments, and training routine. What works for me isn’t necessarily going to work for you. I’m not going to post a watch photo everyday trying to guilt you into to anything.
