SM 엔터테인먼트에서 레드벨벳 이후로 6년 만의 신인 걸 그룹으로 2020년 11월 17일에 싱글 〈Black Mamba〉로 데뷔하였다. 구성원으로는 한국인 2명, 일본인 1명, 중국인 1명으로 구성되어 있다.

The group's name, Aespa, is a combination of “æ”, composed of the English initials of Avatar and Experience (Avatar X Experience), and the English word “aspect” meaning “two sides”, symbolizing “meeting another self and experiencing the new world”.

The members were revealed individually from October 27 to 30 (in order: Winter, Karina, Ningning, and Giselle) along with the name æspa.
