#IELTS Question: Do computers mark tests?

A few people asked me this question:

Are reading and listening tests marked by a computer?

I have checked several official IELTS sources, and the answer seems to be no. All 4 parts of the test are marked by trained human examiners.

#IELTS Grammar: However and whereas

You can not use 'however' and 'whereas' in the same way. Follow these general rules in order to avoid grammar mistakes.

Use 'however' (followed by a comma) at the beginning of a sentence to contrast with the previous sentence:

•Some people beleive that schools are responsible for the behaviour of their students.
However, others argue that dispicline is that responsibility of parents.

Use 'whereas' (after a comma) to contrast two ideas in the same sentence:

•Some people beleive that schools are responsible for the behaviour of their students, whereas others argue that discipline is the responsibility of parents.

You can use 'on the other hand' or 'by contrast' in the same way as 'however'. You can use 'while' instead of 'whereas'.

#IELTS Advice: long sentences

Many students seem to think that the following is true:
long sentences=complex=high score

This is not true. Long sentences are just short sentences that have been linked together. It's easy to write a long sentence. It's also easy to write a long sentence which is full of mistakes!

You don't need to be Shakespeare to get a band 7 (or band 9)! You just need to write clear, organised sentencrs which answer the question and contain some good vocabulary.

#IELTS Writing Task 1: to, by, with, at

To explain how to use to, by, with and at when describing numbers. Here are some examples to give you a basic idea of the differnce:

1) Use to when describing what happened to the number:
In 2008, the rate of unemployment rose to 10℅.

2) Use by when describing the amount of change between two numbers:
In 2009, the rate of unemloyment fell by 2℅. (from 10℅ to 8℅)

3) Use with to give the idea of 'Having' the number:
Obama won the election with 52℅ of the vote.

4) Use at to add the number on the end of a sentence or beginning:

#Using 'Had better'

I had better ('it would be a good idea if I', 'it would be better for me to') is used as a modal auxiliary verb:

I had (or I'd) better sleep now. It would be a good idea for me to sleep now.🤫

You'd better discuss this issue with Bruno. You should discuss this issue with Bruno.👌

We'd better leave before the police come. Let's leave before the police come.🚔🏃‍♂

He'd better not come. It would be a bad idea for him to come.🤦‍♂

Had better is always followed by a verb in the infinitive without 'to':

You had better BE on time. You must or should be on time.👍

Had better is ALWAYS formed from the auxiliary verb 'have' in the past simple ('has better' or 'will have better' do not exist!).

She had better be ready for next week's meeting. She really must be ready for next week's meeting.😉

In informal English, we sometimes say I had best, used with the same meaning:

I'd best go home. It would be good for me to go home.✊

You'd best listen to what he has to say. It would be a good idea for you to listen to what he has to say.

#IELTS Advice: do not ask the examiner's questions

In yesterday's lesson I mentioned that you should not ask the examiner's questions like "Do you mean in my country or here in England?" If there is a question about where you live, the examiner does not care which country you talk about.

Some students try to involve the examiner in the conversation. For example:

Examiner: Do you like cooking?
Student: Not really, I prefer eating in restaurants. And you?

You should definitely not do this!

In fact, the only time that you might need to ask a question is if you do not hear what the examiner said. Just say: "Sorry, can you repeat that please"
