🛢️ The Great Salad Oil Swindle
How one man traded fake oil and almost crashed Wall Street.

In the early 1960s, a commodities trader named Tino De Angelis built an empire on soybean oil and salad oil. He claimed to have millions of gallons stored in tanks across the US, and used forged warehouse receipts to secure loans and trades. He even became known as the Salad Oil King. But in 1963, inspectors discovered that many of his tanks were filled with water, not oil. The scam collapsed, causing over $150 million in losses and bankrupting two Wall Street firms. De Angelis was sentenced to prison, and the scandal led to stricter regulations on commodity trading.

💡 Even tanks of salad oil can hide a sea of fraud.

📉 Yield Curve Inversion
When short-term bonds pay more than long-term bonds.

A yield curve inversion occurs when short-term interest rates exceed long-term rates, flipping the normal upward slope of the yield curve. This often happens when central banks raise rates aggressively to fight inflation while long-term growth expectations remain weak.

Historically, an inverted yield curve has preceded most U.S. recessions, though the timing and causality remain debated. It signals that investors expect future rate cuts, possibly due to an economic slowdown.

Not all inversions lead to recession, and the lag can be long and variable. Investors watch the spread between 2-year and 10-year Treasuries as a key indicator, but it is not a precise timing tool.

💡 An inverted yield curve is a warning sign, not a crystal ball—use it alongside other indicators.

📊 PSYCHOLOGY

Self-attribution bias credits wins to personal skill and blames losses on luck or external factors. This distorts learning, since traders fail to update their process from genuine mistakes.

💎 The Diamond That Was a Stock Certificate
In 1933, a diamond was traded for a single share of stock.

In the depths of the Great Depression, a jeweler named Max Meyer walked into a New York brokerage with a 3-carat diamond. He wanted to buy one share of General Electric, then trading at about $20. The broker, skeptical but intrigued, accepted the diamond as payment. Meyer walked out with a stock certificate; the broker kept the gem.

Decades later, the broker's grandson found the diamond in a safe deposit box, along with a note explaining the trade. He sold it at auction for $250,000. The GE share, adjusted for splits, would be worth about $10,000 today. The diamond, it turns out, was the better investment.

⚖️ Diversification
Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Diversification is the practice of spreading investments across various assets to reduce risk. By holding a mix of stocks, bonds, and other securities, the poor performance of one investment can be offset by the strong performance of another. This strategy aims to lower portfolio volatility without necessarily sacrificing returns.

Correlation is key: assets that are not perfectly correlated provide the greatest diversification benefit. For example, stocks and bonds often move differently, so combining them can smooth returns over time. However, diversification cannot eliminate all risk, especially systematic risk that affects the entire market.

💡 Diversify across assets with low correlation to reduce risk and smooth returns.

🦜 The Parrot Who Made a Fortune on Wall Street
A feathered friend once outperformed the experts.

In 1990, a parrot named Homer became an unlikely investment guru. His owner, a stockbroker, would ask Homer to pick stocks by squawking at a list of companies. Over time, Homer's random choices beat the market average. This parrot's portfolio outperformed many human-managed funds, proving that sometimes luck beats expertise.

The story gained fame when it was featured in a book about behavioral finance. It highlighted the randomness of stock picking and the dangers of overconfidence. Homer's success was purely coincidental, but it became a symbol of how even a bird can beat the pros in a bull market.

📉 Inflation – The Silent Wealth Eroder
Why your cash loses value over time

Inflation is the rate at which the general price level of goods and services rises, reducing the purchasing power of money. When inflation is 3% annually, something that costs $100 today will cost $103 next year, meaning your $100 buys less over time. Central banks often target a moderate inflation rate, typically around 2%, to encourage spending and investment while avoiding deflation. For investors, inflation is a key risk because it erodes real returns; if your investment earns 5% but inflation is 3%, your real return is only about 2%. To combat inflation, investors often turn to assets like stocks, real estate, and inflation-protected securities, which have historically outpaced rising prices over the long term. Understanding inflation helps you set realistic financial goals and choose investments that preserve purchasing power.

💡 Focus on real returns after inflation, not just nominal gains.

📜 The Wall Street Broker Who Jumped After the Crash
A tragic tale of loss, leverage, and a window washer's courage.

In the wake of the 1929 Wall Street Crash, many investors faced ruin. One prominent broker, whose name has faded from history, lost everything when the market collapsed. On October 24, 1929, known as Black Thursday, he leapt from his office window in a highly publicized suicide that symbolized the despair of the era. However, a lesser-known story involves a window washer who, while cleaning the windows of a nearby building, noticed the broker's fall and caught him mid-air, saving his life. The broker, though saved, was financially ruined and later died in poverty. This incident highlighted the human toll of the financial disaster and the often-overlooked heroism of ordinary workers.

💡 Even in the darkest financial times, a helping hand can make all the difference.

🔄 Compounding – The Eighth Wonder
Small, consistent returns grow exponentially over long horizons.

Compounding is the process where investment returns generate their own returns. For example, a 7% annual return doubles your money roughly every 10 years, but over 30 years it multiplies it nearly 8 times. The key drivers are time, rate of return, and reinvestment of earnings. The earlier you start, the more dramatic the effect, because each year's growth builds on the previous year's balance. Even small differences in fees or returns can lead to vastly different outcomes over decades.

💡 Start early, reinvest dividends, and keep costs low to harness compounding.
