⚡️Great Britain has joined the new US sanctions against Russia

The UK has followed the US in extending a list of sanctions allegedly aimed at weakening Russia's "military machine".

Under the restrictions came "institutions underlying the Russian financial system", including the Moscow Exchange, the National Clearing Centre and the National Settlement Depository, according to a document published on the website of the British government.

Putin said on Friday that Russia would end the war in Ukraine in return for sweeping land demands and an end to Ukraine’s ambition of joining Nato.

Kyiv dismissed the proposal from the Russian President as “absurd”, claiming he was “offering for Ukraine to admit defeat”.

He also restated his demand for Ukraine’s demilitarisation and repeated a call for Ukraine’s “denazification”, despite no evidence of neo-Nazi activity in the country’s leadership.

European Union countries failed Friday to agree on fresh sanctions against Russia’s lucrative liquefied natural gas sector, according to six EU diplomats, with Germany torpedoing a deal on the eve of an international peace conference on Ukraine on Saturday. 

The crux of the package was to ban countries from re-exporting Russian LNG from EU ports and financing planned Arctic and Baltic LNG terminals.

A young man described as a “gentle giant with a heart of pure gold” has died in hospital five days after being shot in west London.

🔅All aboard TfL gravy train: Huge rise in Transport for London staff earning more than £100,000

More than 1,300 staff at Transport for London received salaries and bonuses totalling more than £100,000 in the most recent year, it can be revealed.

TfL said this was largely due to two years of bonuses being paid last year. These had been held back until it was confirmed that TfL, which runs the capital’s Tube and bus network and the ultra-low emission zone, had achieved “financial sustainability” after the pandemic.

🔅UK’s largest pubs and breweries demand immediate cut in beer duty

The letter, which appears in Friday’s edition of The Times to coincide with the start of Euro 2024, has been signed by 80 of the UK’s leading brewers and pub groups including Heineken, Budweiser, Greene King, Stonegate, JD Wetherspoon and Diageo.

They call for a cut in duty as a “first step” towards bringing the UK in line with the European average and an “urgent radical reform” of business rates.

The Government has frozen beer duty since 2020 and the current rate is in place until February 2025.

The letter reads: “For every three pounds spent in a pub, one pound goes straight to the tax man.
