Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip has affected half a million children so far

Geneva - Approximately half a million Palestinian children have been affected by Israel’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, which has now entered its 36th consecutive day, the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a statement. The estimated figure includes those who have been killed, injured, or whose family homes have been damaged or destroyed.

Euro-Med Monitor reported that 6,100 children have been killed or reported missing under the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israel’s intense air and artillery attacks on the Strip, stating that chances for their survival diminishes with each passing day.

More than 15,500 children have been injured, said Euro-Med Monitor, with dozens of them in critical condition. Other children have suffered limb amputations, while hundreds more have suffered severe burns to their bodies, according to the Geneva-based human rights organisation.

Israel uses its ‘safe corridor’ in Gaza as trap to murder and detain Palestinians fleeing Israeli violence

Geneva - Israel has turned the “safe corridor” it announced a few days ago into a trap where displaced individuals and families are killed or arrested and abused, said Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.

According to Euro-Med Monitor, the Israeli army’s claim of a safe passage for the displaced is part of the military tactics that it uses to attack Palestinian civilians. Israel’s army, which has been forcing residents of Gaza City and the Gaza Strip’s northern areas to move to the south of the Strip, has designated a “corridor” along Salah al-Din Road—the city’s main thoroughfare—between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day for the time being.

Displaced individuals who crossed the alleged “corridor” over the course of the past three days provided testimony to the Euro-Med Monitor team, describing horrifying incidents of killing, arrest, and intentional humiliation. Gaza City resident Iyad Zakaria, 43, confirmed that he and his family of eight, including his elderly mother, had to walk roughly seven kilometres in order to escape to the southern part of the Strip.

In total violation of the rules of war, Israel targets dozens of mosques, churches in Gaza

Geneva – Israel has targeted dozens of mosques and churches in the Gaza Strip as part of its ongoing assault, which is now in its second month, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a new statement released today. Israel’s bombing of places of worship is in clear violation of international humanitarian law and the laws of war, the organisation said.

According to the Geneva-based human rights group, recent Israeli attacks have resulted in the total destruction of 66 mosques and partial damage to 146 others, accounting for approximately 20% of all mosques in the Gaza Strip. Additionally, three historic churches have suffered damage in various areas of the Strip.

Euro-Med Monitor has documented dozens of casualties due to Israeli attacks on mosques, including Ahmed Yassin Mosque in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, Salim Abu Muslim Mosque in the town of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip, and Khalid bin Al-Walid Mosque in the southern city of Khan Yunis.

Gaza: Palestinian cancer patients die due to hospital closures, lack of medical care

Geneva - As Israel continues its assault on the Gaza Strip for the second month in a row, thousands of Gazan patients face a slow death due to the severe lack of medical care, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said on Wednesday.

The Israeli attacks and targeting of hospitals, along with Israel’s cutting off of humanitarian supplies, have put hundreds of cancer and chronic disease patients, pregnant women, and newborn babies at risk of death, Euro-Med Monitor warned.

The international human rights group drew attention to the grave dangers associated with Gaza’s worsening health service deficit. Prior to the recent Israeli bombardment of the Strip, the region was already severely underfunded, and cancer patients in particular faced difficulties in receiving the medical care they required despite their urgent health needs.

*French draft law to silence voices criticising Israel for its atrocity crimes*

Mohammad Moghabat
Director of Euro-Med Monitor's Office in Lebanon

Statements by several UN officials and numerous scholars describe the acts committed by Israel against the civilian population in Gaza as atrocity crimes. The UN Secretary General himself said that the “appalling attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people”, as collective punishment falls under “crimes against humanity” within the Rome Statute.

The French Senate should be aware of France’s international obligations to promote and protect the right to freedom of opinion and expression. People must be able to hold and express political opinions, especially when their opinions run counter to the beliefs of those in power, and as long as individuals are not calling for violence or racial discrimination.

In order to preserve the right of the people to hold and express their opinions, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor calls on the French Senate and government to uphold their international obligations under the ICCPR and withdraw the draft law sanctioning anti-Zionism.

In a matter of hours, Israel carries out the bloodiest massacre in its history

Geneva – In just a few hours of violent and intense air attacks on the Gaza Strip overnight, and amid a total blackout of communications and Internet services, Israel has committed its largest massacre since its establishment in 1948, the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor reported today.

Euro-Med Monitor estimated that Israel's overnight attacks, the scale of which is unprecedented since the start of its war on the Gaza Strip on 7 October, left more than 1,500 people dead or wounded as well as hundreds of homes destroyed, many with their residents trapped inside.

The Euro-Med team received shocking testimonies from residents of Gaza City about the intense, bloody attacks, especially from the Al-Fawaydah Harat Al-Rayes area of Gaza where scores of people were reportedly killed by hours of ceaseless bombardment.

Israel is Waging an Extensive War of Starvation against Gaza’s Civilian Population
Geneva — As part of its ongoing war for the fifth week in a row, Israel has sharply increased in recent hours what can only be described as a war of starvation against civilians in the Gaza Strip in an effort to deepen their difficult living conditions, which has reached catastrophic levels, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to Euro-Med Monitor, the Israeli war of starvation has taken very dangerous turns, including cutting off all food supplies to the Northern half and bombing and destroying factories, bakeries, food stores, water stations, and tanks throughout the entire enclave.

Israel has deliberately focused its attacks over the past few hours on targeting electrical generators and solar energy units, on which commercial facilities and restaurants depend to maintain the minimum possible level of their work.

Denmark continues to withdraw temporary protection for Syrian refugees despite the UN, the EU, and NGOs deeming it unsafe and in violation of international law

Emilie Elhauge-Thomsen

Researcher at Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor

Since 2019, the Danish Government has deemed Damascus and Damascus Rif as safe areas for Syrian refugees under Articles 7.2 and 7.3 of the Danish Protection Act. In 2021 the debate on the withdrawal of temporary protection of Syrians under Article 7.3 was at its highest in Denmark, including demonstrations and protests around the country, news media coverage, social media campaigns, etc. However, little happened in March 2023, when the Danish government deemed two more regions, Latakia and Tartus as safe areas, putting more Syrian refugees at risk of return.

Tortured to Death: Horrific Testimonies of Gazan Workers Held in Israel

Geneva — The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor revealed that thousands of Gaza laborers were subjected to horrific forms of torture by Israeli forces during their four-week detention, which resulted in the death of at least one of them.

Horrific testimonies were provided to Euro-Med Monitor after the deportation of over 3,000 of Palestinian workers to the Gaza Strip on Friday. It was confirmed that the worker Mansour Nabhan Warsh Agha, from the northern Gaza Strip, was tortured to death, while the fate of thousands more is still unknown.

The deported workers were reportedly blindfolded, their hands and feet bound, and transported on private Israeli buses to the Kerem Abu Salem crossing in southeast Gaza, according to testimony gathered by Euro-Med Monitor. They were forced to walk for more than five kilometers before reaching the Rafah crossing gate and entering the Gaza Strip.

Scholars’ consensus: Genocide in Gaza marks turning point, Israel must be held accountable

Geneva – The characterisation of Israeli actions in Gaza as genocide by UN experts and international legal scholars should mark a turning point, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said today, in a call for Israel to be held accountable for its crimes.

“As scholars and practitioners of international law, conflict studies, and genocide studies, we are compelled to sound the alarm about the possibility of the crime of genocide being perpetrated by Israeli forces against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” reads the public statement signed by 880 scholars on 15 October. The statement was released one week after the Israeli aggression on Gaza began, with less than 20% of the current tally of deaths and destruction.

The public statement highlighted the overwhelming evidence that Israel had carried out genocide against civilians in the Gaza Strip, including disproportionate attacks and indiscriminate bombing, the destruction of residential neighbourhoods, the use of starvation as a weapon, and the complete cutoff of humanitarian supplies.

Israel hit Gaza Strip with the equivalent of two nuclear bombs

Geneva - Israel has dropped more than 25,000 tons of explosives on the Gaza Strip since the start of its large-scale war on 7 October, equivalent to two nuclear bombs, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a press release issued today.

According to the Geneva-based human rights organisation, the Israeli army has admitted to bombing over 12,000 targets in the Gaza Strip, with a record tally of bombs exceeding 10 kilograms of explosives per individual. Euro-Med Monitor highlighted that the weight of the nuclear bombs dropped by the United States on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan at the end of World War II in August 1945 was estimated at about 15,000 tons of explosives.

The Geneva-based Euro-Med Monitor examined footage that showed Palestinian civilians in the town of Yatta in Hebron, in the southern West Bank, being dragged and assaulted by Israeli soldiers. The number of children killed in Gaza in less than a month is ten times higher than the annual number of children killed in Ukraine in one year

Geneva
: Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip have resulted in the death of a Palestinian child every seven minutes, a bloody toll that is unprecedented in modern history and far exceeds the situation in the Ukraine war, the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a new statement released today.

Over the course of 24 days of Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling in the Gaza Strip, 3,457 children were confirmed killed by the Geneva-based Euro-Med Monitor, with over a thousand more going missing beneath the debris.

Based on data from the United Nations, this figure is more than ten times the number of children killed in Russia's war on Ukraine in the first year, from the end of February 2022 to the end of February 2023.

Europe must stop its support of Israel’s ongoing war crimes in Gaza

Geneva - In an urgent letter addressing the President of the European Union Commission, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has accused EU officials and leaders of complicity in the ongoing Israeli war crimes against civilians in the Gaza Strip.

The human rights organisation called on Ursula von der Leyen and the EU to pressure Israel for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and end its genocide campaign against Palestinians, ongoing for the fourth consecutive week now. In its letter, Euro-Med Monitor stressed the critical need to force Israel to halt hostilities and create a humanitarian corridor so that aid can reach the people living in the Strip amid the humanitarian catastrophe.
