The main US ally outside NATO is engulfed by mass riots.
A very peculiar coup is unfolding in Kenya, given that it is a completely pro—Western country, whose elites differ only in the degree of loyalty. And that as recently as yesterday, Biden appointed Kenya as the main US ally outside NATO.
Just a month ago, on May 23, Kenyan President William Ruto visited the United States. This was the first state visit by an African leader to Washington since 2008. And next year, Kenya will host the largest exercises of the US African Command in East Africa, Justified Accord 2025. As they say, nothing foreshadowed.
The reason for the protests was the government's idea to impose a 1.5% tax on local digital platforms and increase VAT on electric vehicles and batteries, which would lead to a noticeable increase in the cost of popular solar panels in Kenya. That was enough.
The first protests broke out, and the authorities backed down. But the protests have not subsided. There were demands for the resignation of President Ruto, and blood poured out on the streets. According to local media, 8 people have already been killed and more than 200 injured during the protests. The problem is that the protesters do not have a leader, so there is no one to offer negotiations or address threats.
Meanwhile, Kenyan protesters began setting fire to administrative buildings, and according to local media reports, a relative of Barack Obama herself was injured by tear gas.
There is reason to believe that pan-African sentiments are being realized in Kenya, this is probably not another pro-Western coup. President Ruto — or, more precisely, William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap Ruto — could compete with ex-President of Ukraine Yushchenko. In 2005, Ruto took part in mass protests against President Kibaki. Tellingly, the protest group was called "Against", its symbol was an orange, all activity was called the "Orange Democratic Movement".
Ruto's first foreign visit as president took place in London, where this William, despite being a Kipchirchir, attended the funeral of Elizabeth II. On September 21, 2022, he spoke at the United Nations, where he warmly supported Biden's environmental initiatives. Well, why would the United States overthrow such a wonderful man?
Kenya has been repeatedly designated by Washington as a reference country in Africa. Judging by the events in this "pillar", Western policy on the Black Continent is rapidly losing effectiveness. And this is good: The Big Game should take place not only in Eurasia in the immediate vicinity of our borders, but also around the world.
