Quick tips to improve your English speaking today

Public speaking can make you feel very nervous.

Here are 3 tips to reduce nervousness:

1. Practice deep breathing. Close your eyes, take a deep breathe through your nose and exhale through your mouth slowly. Take your time. Enjoy every breathe.

2. Once you have calmed down a bit, reflect on what you are thinking about at this very moment. Try to find what makes you feel nervous. Nervousness is the effect, the cause lies somewhere in your mind; your thoughts.

3. Once you found the thoughts that lead you to feeling nervous, try to challenge them. Are they true facts or subjective opinions? Are they reality or assumption? What’s the worst thing that could happen, and is it really the worst thing?

Bonus: Take a pen and paper and do no. 2 & 3 in writing. When you put it in writing, it becomes visible and concrete. If it stays in your mind, it is abstract.

2 REASONS WHY YOU FEEL NERVOUS IN FRONT OF A CROWD

1. There are too many of them!

The fear is real. You stand in front of an audience and they are all staring at you, all at once. You think that perhaps they are judging you and you feel like you are being punished for something you did.

It's not a good feeling.

But, if you can pause and ponder on it, you will realize that you are actually making up most of the things you fear in your head.

In reality, you have no idea what they are thinking and they have no idea what you are thinking. Both parties are guessing what the other is thinking, and most of those guesses are negative.

Right?

2. There are important people among them!

This is a bit tricky. You can feel this fear even if the number of people in front of you are only a handful (e.g. in a panel interview or during a viva presentation).

The number of people is not the issue, the issue is who is among them. You know that they are important people who are of a higher status.

Quite possibly, they even have the power to make important decisions that could affect your life in some way. You are afraid that they will make a decision that will prevent you from reaching your goals.

So even before you open your mouth, you already imagine that they will make that dreaded decision. But hold on, how do you know what they will do?

Again, you are making a guess about yourself that is sabotaging your own performance. You are making stuff up.

Plus, even though the people in front of are important people...they are still people. They are just like you; they too feel fear and insecurities.

As people, they are not above you and you are not below them. As people, we are all equal and the best among us is the one with the highest taqwa. The good news is, we have NO IDEA who has the highest taqwa.

Phew! That's a relief right?

I met a shy primary school girl who doesn't want to read an English article. But I managed to ask her to read.

To my surprise, her English is very good! I can safely say that some university students might feel a bit embarrassed if they hear her speak.

That girl can speak. But that's not the issue. The issue is, in her mind, I think she believes that she can't speak.

Be careful about what you believe about yourself. Perhaps the world isn't your enemy. Perhaps it's yourself.

Confidence should be mostly internal. When you make it mostly external, it becomes temporary.

If your confidence depends on your grades, your grades are temporary. It goes up and down.

If your confidence depends on your money, your money is temporary. Some days you have a lot, others you have little.

If your confidence depends on your beauty, your beauty is temporary. The passage of time will show on your face whether you like it or not.

Time to audit your confidence. Is it mostly internal, or mostly external?

Gratitude journal

Before you go to bed tonight, take 5 minutes to list down what you are grateful for.

Write as fast as you can and list as many as you can. It doesn’t have to be big.

Gratitude extends to everything, from the biggest to the smallest.

Don’t just say you’re grateful. Be specific. List it down. Count your blessings.

If you can’t think of any off the top of your head, perhaps that’s a sign that your mind is focusing on something else a lot of the times.

If you are focusing on your blessings, then what are you focusing on? That will dictate how you feel about yourself and how you live your life.

Why you should master public speaking

Public speaking is the communication skill that directly combines interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.

You are talking to other people, but you are also talking with yourself. You are practising self-control, particular ego control, to battle your insecurities and lack of confidence.

That strong and healthy intrapersonal communication can help you with connecting with people on a deeper level. When you are connected with people, that’s how you can get your message across and internalized by others.

It is not enough to say the right things. You have to say it in the right way. That's how you connect on a deeper level.

Remember, a gift is more than its contents.

It’s also about how it’s wrapped.
