A Sublime Passage on Love by Jacob Boehme:

The Virtue of Love is NO-THING and ALL, or No-Thing visible out of which All-Things proceed; Its Power is through All-Things; Its Height is as high as God; Its Greatness is as great as God. Its Virtue is the Principle of all Principles; Its Power supports the Heavens and upholds the Earth; Its Height is higher than the highest Heavens; and Its Greatness is even greater than the very Manifestation of the Godhead in the glorious Light of the Divine Essence, as being infinitely capable of greater and greater Manifestations in all Eternity. What can I say more? Love is higher than the Highest. Love is greater than the Greatest...God is Love, and Love is God. Love being the Highest Principle, is the Virtue of all Virtues from whence they flow forth. Love being the Greatest Majesty, is the Power of all Powers, from whence they severally operate; and It is the Holy Magical Root, or Ghostly Power from whence all the Wonders of God have been wrought by the Hands of his Elect Servants, in all their Generations successively. Whosoever finds It, finds No-Thing and All-Things.

From now through Saturday, my book PRONAOS: Reflections on the Preliminary Practices of Buddhist Tantra From a Western Perspective is available for free on Amazon Kindle. If you've been waiting for a good opportunity to check it out, now is the time!

"This book is a wonderful, wonderful gift that offers profound inspiration and advice for dharma practitioners or anyone interested spiritual growth in general. Drawing parallels at each stage with Western spiritual and mythological traditions, Greg Kaminsky distills the preliminary considerations and practices of Buddhist Tantra in an immediate and relatable way. Regardless of what we bring to the table, our age, stage in life, or past baggage, Kaminsky implores us to begin again – starting simply with our desire to be better people, and our desire to help other beings – and to connect with the confidence that we possess the capacity for enlightened wisdom and compassion even if we aren’t feeling it right now. From this point Kaminsky guides us through the foundational considerations of Buddhist view – Four Noble Truths, Six Perfections, Four Thoughts that Turn the Mind to Dharma – with fresh insight, offering practical and approachable ways for us to consider their presence (or absence) in our lives and to be changed by them. I love his description of Patience as “calmly abiding in circumstances we intrinsically don’t prefer, find irritating, annoying, frustrating, and typically make us react with anger, aversion and complete self-concern.” – Wow. That about sums it up for the patience-challenged! Kaminsky then walks through each of the 4 preliminary Ngondro practices weaving teachings from his Lama, Traktung Khepa, corollaries from Western traditions, and his honest human experience of starting out daunted by 111,111 repetitions of each and the growth in view, faith and discipline needed to approach them one day at a time – building from a handful of prostrations a day to 500 and more. With this direct experience of then completing the practices, Kaminsky testifies to their life-changing effect and how we too can experience this. Coming full circle, Kaminsky finishes to book inviting us to start where we are and take up the way: “It’s time to undertake the Great Work, create the Philosopher’s Stone, find the Holy Grail, and rebuild the Temple of Solomon. So, let us begin.”. Indeed." - Amazon reviewer

"Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Ripoche, wrote this. This verse comes as close as you can get in words to delineating self-recognition, and how to facilitate it.
You will see in this verse very similar statements as in Gabriel and the Third Patriarch’s text, The Faith Mind. The instruction is to cease conceptualising and be aware nakedly, and no you don’t have to take your clothes off. It is not meant to be read and thought about, it is an instruction to ACT ON."

"Now, when you are introduced (to your own intrinsic awareness), the method for entering into it involves three considerations:

Thoughts in the past are clear and empty and leave no traces behind.

Thoughts in the future are fresh and unconditioned by anything. And in the present moment, when (your mind) remains in its own condition without constructing anything; awareness, at that moment, in itself is quite ordinary.

And when you look into yourself in this way nakedly (without any discursive thoughts). Since there is only this pure observing, there will be found a lucid clarity without anyone being there who is the observer; only a naked manifest awareness is present.

(This awareness) is empty and immaculately pure, not being created by anything whatsoever. It is authentic and unadulterated, without any duality of clarity and emptiness.
It is not permanent and yet it is not created by anything. However, it is not a mere nothingness or something annihilated because it is lucid and present.

It does not exist as a single entity because it is present and clear in terms of being many. (On the other hand) it is not created as a multiplicity of things because it is inseparable and of a single flavor.

This inherent self-awareness does not derive from anything outside itself.

This is the real introduction to the actual condition of things."

"And if this is so, it is a great god, though it is not just some god; rather, one might well think that that which is all Beings is the universal god. And this nature is god, a second god, revealing itself before we see the first. That first God is seated or settled above Intellect, as if on a sort of beautiful pedestal which is suspended from it. For it had to be the case that the One, in proceeding, did not proceed to something soulless, nor indeed even proceed immediately to Soul, but that there had to be an indescribable beauty leading its way, just as in the procession of a great king, the lesser come first, and the greater and more dignified come after them in turn, and those who are even closer to the king are more regal, and those next even more honoured. After all these, the Great King suddenly reveals himself, with the people praying to him and prostrating themselves, at least those who have not already left, thinking that it was enough to see those who preceded the king."

"In Europe, every consciously established link with the centre through the medium of orthodox organizations is now broken, as has been the case for several centuries. This severance was gradual, completed in various successive stages rather than at once. The first of these breaks occurred at the beginning of the fourteenth century, at which time one of the principal roles of the Orders of Chivalry was to make a direct connection between East and West. The importance of such a link will be readily understood when it is recalled that the centre has always, at least in 'historical' times, been depicted as being situated in the Orient. After the destruction of the Order of the Templars, the liaison was maintained in a less overt fashion by the Rosicrucians, or those to whom this name was afterwards given. The Renaissance and the Reformation marked another critical phase, after which, as Saint-Yves appears to suggest, the complete and final rupture coincided with the treaties of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War in 1648. It is a remarkable fact that several writers have agreed that the true Rosicrucians left Europe shortly after the Thirty Years War to retire into Asia: it may be recalled that the Rosicrucian adepts numbered twelve like the members of Agarttha's inner circle; both, therefore, complied with the constitution common to so many other spiritual centres formed in the image of the supreme centre.

Since that last period, the store of effective initiatory knowledge has not been truly kept by any western organization. According to Swedenborg, the 'lost Word' must hence forth be sought among the Sages of Tibet and of Tartary, where the mysterious 'Mount of Prophets' of Anne-Catherine Emmerich's vision is also set. The fragmentary information that Madame Blavatsky was able to gather on this subject without fully understanding its true significance - gave birth to her conception of the 'Great White Lodge', which we should call not an image, but quite simply a caricature or imaginary parody, of Agarttha." - Rene Guenon, "King of the World", pages 47-48

It turns out that Pico was assassinated on this date in 1494, poisoned by his assistant on the eve of when Pico's protection by the Medici was about to evaporate as the army of Charles VIII approached Florence. Pico had many enemies, including the powerful Dominican friar Savonarola.

Remembering Count Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494) on the anniversary of his death. Pico was perhaps the single greatest impetus for the movement which came to be known as Christian Cabalism, which unfolded into Western esotericism in its myriad forms. Due to his vision, youthful enthusiasm, and ambivalence towards authority, Pico unveiled to the Western world a formerly neglected, and in many senses lost, stream of ancient wisdom and view of humanity. His 900 conclusions and Oration on the Dignity of Man are a testament to his light that still shines in the world.

"Meister Eckhart says that it is not that you contemplate different things eternally and temporally, or that there are different things that work in you or are worked by you, which you take or possess. Rather, they are the same things, which you now only see, take or possess differently. Just as you are not a different man when you are temporal than when you are eternal, but rather that you are the same man in a different way." - Franz Xaver von Baader, Die Weltalter (The Ages of the World) 322

In Meditations on the Tarot, this Silence is related to concentration without effort. To know this Silence is to be this Silence. That is, the discursive mind is quieted of its thoughts, images, desires. This is a concentration, not of something, but the effortless concentration of the Silence.

"Truly, it is in darkness that one finds the light, so when we are in sorrow, then this light is nearest of all to us."

Meister Eckhart

Contemplating the mystery of faith today and the manner in which authentic faith requires doubt and the testing of whatever is being asserted as worthy of faithfulness. The way to gain faith is to practice it, and the way to practice it is to test the axioms of the spiritual teachings in the circumstances of our lives. But the way to not gain faith is to use our reasoning mind to think about it in an abstract manner. We might, at times, prefer a spirituality that doesn't require us to leave our comfortable ways of being behind, at least for a few moments, but that won't ever really work.

"Faith is an oasis in the heart which will never be reached by the caravan of thinking." - Khalil Gibran (allegedly)
