A Royal Javanese Tradition: Unggah-Unggahan at the Surakarta Hadiningrat PalaceOn Saturday, March 9, 2024, the Karaton Surakarta Hadiningrat hosted the annual Unggah-Unggahan tradition in the Bangsal Pradonggo. This year, the event was open to the public, allowing visitors to witness this unique ritual firsthand.
The three daughters of the King, GKR. Timoer Rumbai, GRAy. Devi Lelyana Dewi, and GRAy. Dewi Ratih Widyasari, also participated in the festivities.
Unggah-Unggahan is a Javanese tradition observed in the month of Ruwah, also known as the month of the spirits. It marks the end of the Ruwah month and follows the Nyadran tradition of visiting the tombs of ancestors to pray. At the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace, Unggah-Unggahan is a ceremony to honor and 'memule' (glorify) the ancestors.
A distinctive feature of this tradition is the presence of Apem, a special food only served during the Ruwah month. The name Apem comes from the Javanese phrase "Apuranen Kangtumemen," which expresses the hope for forgiveness for the ancestors.
In the Unggah-Unggahan tradition, Apem serves as a symbol of this aspiration, representing the act of offering and seeking forgiveness.
