Federal government promising a 'renters' bill of rights' in upcoming budget

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced upcoming budget measures aimed at protecting renters, particularly young people who are renting more than previous generations. The measures include a proposed renters' bill of rights, a $15-million fund for legal aid against landlord abuse, and changes to federal rules to include rental payments in credit scores. These announcements precede the April 16 budget release, part of a new communications strategy for the Liberals. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland hinted at further housing-related announcements to come. The move comes amid concerns about housing affordability and cost-of-living issues, with the opposition Conservatives highlighting these issues. Trudeau emphasized the need for fairness and addressing economic challenges facing young people.

Trudeau says conservative premiers are lying about carbon pricing

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says conservative politicians across Canada, including premiers, are lying to Canadians about the carbon price.

Trudeau's government is buckling as attacks mount against carbon pricing, and voters increasingly side with politicians who say the policy is making their lives less affordable.

Most premiers and the federal Conservatives are pushing the Liberals to at least cancel a scheduled increase of the carbon price on April 1.

Trudeau says those politicians are failing to acknowledge and inform Canadians about carbon-price rebates meant to offset consumers' costs, and he is accusing Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre of blocking legislation that would double the rebate top-up for rural Canadians.

His comments at a press conference in Vancouver on Wednesday come as several premiers are bringing their anti-carbon price pleas to a House of Commons committee this week.

Statistics Canada says population growth rate in 2023 was highest since 1957

Canada's population grew by 3.2 percent last year, its highest rate since 1957, reaching 40,769,890 people. The growth was primarily due to temporary immigration, without which the growth rate would have been 1.2 percent.

Could Canadian Realtors commission change after US lawsuit?

A landmark court settlement in the U.S. regarding the standard six per cent commission for Realtors, and a similar suit in Canada, could lead to major changes when buying and selling homes.

The rule changes, which are set to take effect in mid- July, represent a major change to the way real estate agents have operated going back to the 1990s, and could potentially lead to homebuyers and sellers negotiating lower agent commissions. As the spring housing market heats up, a Toronto law firm is hoping to see similar changes come to Canada.

Ontario deficit will triple as economy weakens, 2024 budget shows

Ontario's 2024 budget, presented by Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy, outlines concerns over high interest rates impacting the province's economy, projecting weak growth and a significant deficit. The $214-billion budget focuses on investments in housing, infrastructure, and public services without tax increases. The deficit is expected to triple from $3 billion to $9.8 billion by 2024-2025, delaying a balanced budget until 2026-2027, with a projected surplus of $500 million. This marks the highest non-COVID budget deficit since 2014.

Sean (Diddy) Combs residences searched in connection with sex trafficking investigation

Two properties belonging to music mogul Sean (Diddy) Combs in Los Angeles and Miami were searched Monday by federal Homeland Security Investigations agents and other law enforcement as part of an ongoing sex trafficking investigation by federal authorities in New York, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.

It's not clear whether Combs was the target of the investigation. The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

In a statement, Homeland Security Investigations said it "executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners."

A spokesperson for the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan declined to comment.

Messages to Combs's lawyers and other representatives seeking comment were not immediately returned.

Legal drinking in city parks won't be on tap this summer

Ottawa parkgoers eager to partake in an alcoholic beverage while they're there will likely have to wait until 2025 before they can imbibe legally. Capital Coun. Shawn Menard asked city staff earlier this month if a pilot project allowing the consumption of alcohol in municipal parks could be implemented this summer.

In their response, staff confirmed Monday that "alcohol in parks is an area of interest" for the city's recreation department and would be included an upcoming review of the parks and facilities bylaw, which hasn't had a fulsome update since its enactment in 2004.

I used to judge people who chose to leave Newfoundland for work. Then I had to leave, too

In the fall of 2016, I forced the trunk of my rust-encrusted hatchback closed. The dishes rattled and the garbage bags of bedding shifted. Anything that couldn't fit — like the kitchen table from my childhood — was sold off on Kijiji to pay for gas. Hopefully, my sold-off possessions would find a better home than I could provide.

Surveying my St. John's neighbourhood for the last time, I sighed. I had sneered as my high school classmates disappeared, heading west for jobs in the oilsands, and turned up my nose when my siblings left Newfoundland for employment in Nova Scotia. I considered them turncoats and traitors, lily-livered and weak. Leaving was a choice — one I would never make, I hadn't hesitated to tell them. But now my turn had come.

Physicians sound alarm over unfilled Ontario residency spots

Physicians in Ontario are sounding the alarm as new data shows more than a hundred spaces reserved for training new family doctors have gone unfilled.

Each year, medical school graduates decide what type of medicine they want to specialize in. The Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) matches graduates with residency placements at medical schools in two rounds. There were 108 unfilled family medicine spots out of a total of 560 in Ontario following the first round of this year's match, up from 103 unclaimed spots last year, according to CaRMS data.
