In Bihar’s Nalanda district, a school principal and teacher were arrested this week for showing up to work drunk. Nagendra Prasad, the principal, and Subodh Kumar, a contractual teacher, were reportedly acting erratically at their government school, drawing the attention of villagers. When confronted, they allegedly abused the locals, prompting a police intervention. A viral video has since surfaced showing the two men visibly intoxicated—Kumar, in particular, can be seen stumbling and eventually collapsing as he’s escorted to a police van.

The incident has sparked a wider controversy, with some villagers even accusing a police officer of being drunk, leading to further tensions. Both Prasad and Kumar have been arrested and suspended from their teaching roles. The event raises questions about the effectiveness of Bihar’s liquor ban, which has struggled to curb alcohol consumption since its implementation in 2016. With the school’s integrity now in question, this incident has become a cautionary tale about the impact of alcohol on public life and the challenges of enforcing bans in the state.
