Ridley Scott had a situation to deal with, that if he wanted to be really scared, it had to connect with a very private thought. He had to think about what physically made him feel really uneasy that upset him in a primal way, and Ridley was someone who was not easily made to feel upset.
In the Alien production, when they looked at various painter's work one one that caught their eye was the Crucifixion by Francis Bacon from 1944 that showed three fleshy necks with jaws on the end and as Giger described it, rat's flesh. The primality of the painting, if there was such a word, was what interested Ridley. Ridley told Giger that he wanted something like that, and Giger found the idea was logical.

The second [form of] alien was born through the crab. Bacon did a crucifixion in 1945, and there is a kind of beast in it that has a head that is only a mouth. Ridley said he wanted something like that. it was logical. This beast has to come out, to chew and claw its way out suddenly, unerringly.

Bergman’s original instinct for the film, I read somewhere, was an image. Sometimes it just starts there; that’s happened for me before. You just sort of get an image or a feeling, and that’s where the whole movie kind of derives from. And for him it was this image of these two attractive blonde women, who resembled each other, in matching straw hats, in the sun, comparing hands.

“To me, Heat was always a highly structured, realistic, symphonic drama. I never thought of it as doing a genre piece.”

The sonic architecture of the scream is linked to the infamous concept of the body without organs, since it destroys the ostensibly organised rigidity of the flesh and transmits the shattered body through direct vibration – entering into a deeper rhythm and resonance that will physically take hold of both artist and audience. Artaud’s concept of the body without organs lay the groundwork for Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s own anti-Oedipal project.

Explaining the concept, they write:
“In order to resist organ machines, the body without organs presents its smooth, slippery, opaque, taut surface as barrier. In order to resist linked, connected, interrupted flows, it sets up a counter flow of amorphous, undifferentiated fluid. In order to resist using words composed of articulated phonic units, it utters only gasps and cries that are sheer unarticulated blocks of sound.”
