UAE: Blind since age 10, woman gets sight back after 30 years of wrong diagnosis

For the last 30 years, Hanaa Mahdi Saleh Ali lived in a world without a clear vision. She had lost all hope to see again — until she flew to the UAE to get her eyes checked at an eye hospital in Abu Dhabi. “I couldn’t even imagine a life where I could see again,” said Hanaa, who was born in Yemen. She lost her sight when she was only 10 years old.

Despite her father’s efforts to seek help from numerous eye specialists worldwide, she was consistently diagnosed with vision loss caused by night blindness and severe cataracts. All she could see were blurred lights as she struggled with daily tasks that many people took for granted.

UAE: Free meals for all students in public schools pushed at FNC

UAE foreign trade hits Dh3 trillion in 'historic milestone': Sheikh Mohammed

For the first time, the UAE's foreign trade hit Dh3 trillion by the end of 2024, the country's Vice-President announced on Wednesday. In a post on X, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, called this economic achievement a "historic milestone".

"While global trade grew by just 2 per cent in 2024, the UAE’s foreign trade expanded at seven times that rate, achieving an impressive 14.6-per-cent growth," he wrote.

UAE prevented over 50 suicide cases in 2024 with 'crime map', top official reveals

UAE authorities prevented several crimes and improved the security of the country by using artificial intelligence to come up with a Crime Map that predicts issues before they occur. A senior government official explained how this system has been used.

“With algorithms based on the history of the crimes and global trends, [the map] predicts crimes and gives us notifications and reports,” said Salem Ali Juma Al Zaabi, head of Emergency, Crisis, and Disaster Prosecution at UAE Public Prosecution. “We are working directly with the Cybersecurity Council. We are also trying to push our imagination to be ready for new acts of crime.”

The Abu Dhabi Police's Happiness Patrol has struck again: Sixty motorists in the emirate were recently surprised after being pulled over—not for a traffic offense, but because they were good drivers.

Aiming to spread positivity and promote road safety, UAE authorities reward drivers who follow traffic rules. In previous years, there were motorists who received free fuel cards while some earned 'star of honour' badges. There was also a time when huge TV sets were given away.

UAE's longest mountain trail in Hatta

Work on the UAE’s longest mountain trail has been completed, it was announced on Thursday. Now open to all, the trails in Hatta feature 21 cycling routes spanning 53km; 17 walking trails across 33km; nine wooden bridges; and 14 rest stops and service facilities.

According to the Dubai Municipality, the trails are divided into four colour-coded levels of difficulty: Green – with four tracks for cycling and four for walking; Blue – with six for cycling and three for walking; Red – with eight for cycling and six for walking; and Black – with three for cycling and four for walking.

UAE sees big drop in birth rate; fertility to slightly improve in coming decades, says UN

The UAE's fertility rate has declined significantly over the past 30 years, but it is expected to improve slightly over the next three decades, according to a recent UN report.

The World Fertility Report 2024 revealed that the fertility rate of live births per woman dropped from 3.76 in 1994 to 1.21 in 2024. However, there are projections suggesting a slight rise to 1.34 live births per woman by 2054 in the UAE.

Dubai to host world's largest summit on justice, peace with nearly 3,000 attendees

In April, Dubai will welcome 11 Nobel Peace laureates, heads of state, sports champions, film personalities, chief justices, and over 2,800 peacekeepers for the world’s largest summit on justice, love, and peace.

Dubai: 80 stranded turtles saved from beaches as residents step in to help

A Dubai-based group has saved 80 turtles from the coast of the emirate since January 1, with more being rescued every day, partly thanks to an overwhelming response to a public advisory. Many of the rescued turtles were babies experiencing their first winter, and some weighed as little as 150 grams.

“Last week was one of our busiest yet,” said Barbara Lang-Lenton, Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project (DTRP) lead and Director of Aquarium at Jumeirah Burj Al Arab. “Our record was nine turtles in a single day, although we typically receive between one and five turtles every day.”
