Paper recycling doesn’t only have an environmental benefit, but also economical. Did you know that Ethiopia’s import of paper and packaging materials cost more than 100 million dollars a year😳? .
Our waste paper is a resource! Let’s put it in use and reduce the dollars 💵 we spend on importing it. What do you say? 🗣

We are very grateful to have received an appreciation certificate from the Association for Women’s Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD) 🤩🤩🤩!

Penda has created employment opportunity for 40 dedicated and hard working women (some of them whom you see in the picture) from AWSAD and IOM (International Organisation for Migration). This women have contributed to the growth of Penda and we are glad to have them in our team💕!

Fekadu has been working as an individual collector around the Megenagna area for the past few months. He collects paper waste from the commercial buildings in Megenagna and delivers it to the Worke Cart nearby. Thanks to him many building are able to easily recycle♻️ by delivering their paper waste to us 🙌🏽! If you have an office close to one of our Worke carts, we can assign one reliable collector that can collect all your paper waste. This is a quote from an interview we had with one of the 40 women that have found employment through our Worke system. A stark reminder for why we think our job is so important.

“I was born and raised in an abusive family outside the city. I was beaten daily and worked to my limit. At the age of 16 I was raped and hospitalised. I later found out that I was pregnant and HIV positive. My life was completely shattered, I was segregated from society, and my family kept me away. I came to Addis in the hope of a better life, but I fell into the hands of the wrong people and the abuse continued. I eventually got help and today I am hopeful that with my new job I will be able to provide for my child and live a better life.”

Last year we ran a fundraiser so we could buy gloves for the 4,300 government waste collectors that we work with. The fundraiser was a success and we managed to raise $7000 with your help🤩 This week we handed out gloves to the last teams, and it's been such a rewarding process. Gloves are a crucial work tool for these people, and we are grateful for the opportunity to help some of the most underprivileged individuals in Ethiopian society with a bit of comfort. So thank you from the bottom of our hearts to those that donated. We could not have done it without it you❤️♻️

PENDA IS HIRING!⭐️⭐️

We are looking for a city manager in Bishoftu. The person will be responsible for our collection systems in Bishoftu and work closely with collectors, city administration and Addis team to grow our presence in the city!
You can be based in Addis or Bishoftu.

This is a permanent manger role and we hope to find a dedicated, responsible and positive individual that wants to build something from scratch!

Today we had the honor of welcoming the Norwegian Minister of Development, Dag Inge Ulstein, to our paper recycling site. We love what we do here at Penda, but it's extra fun when we get to share our passion for recycling and job creation with people that care as much for these topics as we do. They got an introduction to Penda, a round tour of the site, and even partook in a recycling challenge😉♻️. A big thank you to the team at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Addis Ababa for making this happen😊

Our Worke collection system turned 100 days today, so of course we had to throw a party! Since the start we've collected 191,391 kg of paper, with our best performing station collecting a staggering 22,798 kg😱! Hipp hipp hurrah🎉🎁

A few weeks ago we introduced you to one of our managers in Team Penda. However, we also have four-legged team members, deserving their own introductions. So without further ado - this is Baochi. One out of two fluff balls that live in the office. He is as obsessed with waste paper as we are, and what he lacks as a guard dog, he makes up for with excessive tail wagging and wet kisses♻️🐶❤️
