May I write something long down here?
These Steins;Gate shorts made me want to rewatch S;G. But more importantly, they reminded me why I loved S;G in the first place. I was thinking about it for some time and here is what I came up with.
So, why do I love S;G? Why do people love anime, movies, music, lots of different pieces of all kinds of media? People like stuff that speaks to them, things, that have a lot in common with them.
First of all, I like S;Gs realistic visual language. Colour palette consists of all these greys and browns, nothing like rainbow-styled typical anime shows. I like the setting: S;G is probably the best science fiction show in anime. It is set in late 90s, early 2000s with all these geeky computers. I had this kind of computer myself.
I share some character points with Okabe. I am kinda egoistic, hate conspiracy and big companies. I like speaking hours on geek stuff and sometimes my mind is blowing with ideas, most of which will never work (future gadget reference, huh). Maybe I am not as clingy as Hoouin Kyoma, but I got ways to improve myself 😉.
I have friends like Daru, those who are much geekier than me, but clearly less socially adapted. I can imagine having Mayushi as a close girl, but not a girlfriend. I participate in cosplay conventions, exclusively as visitor and never (yet) as a cosplayer.
But the most important one in all S;G cast is Makise. I was in doubts if she is still my waifu or not and now I'm certain. She is.
Let's have a look at her relationship with Okabe and the lab. Okabe may shout weird slogans and be main ideologist, but Makise is the one who really gets the routine job done. I dont fully understand what thing in Okarin attracts her, but I can clearly project myself on Okarin's place. Because I, myself, am easily carried away by technology, ideas, all this kind of stuff. I can talk about it for ages, but when it comes to making something, I cant. It's too boring for me. Makise, on the other hand, somehow can do difficult tech tasks in one night. She's very smart and knowledgable. Can it be that she lacks creativity?
I like that Makise is not a sexual object. I mean, yeah, she's hot and I can think of her that way, but it's not her main appeal. I can describe her as a tech buddy, a friend by interest, not a girl to fuck. And that's how I want to build my relationships: around common interest, on a close friendship as a base.
So, Okarin gives ideas on what to do, inspiring Makise. Makise starts working on these ideas, which inspires Okarin to join and help. Eventually they finish a project to its completion. If it is not happiness then what is?
