1939: Sloop van de Vishal op de Nieuwmarkt te Amsterdam - oude filmbeelden
Op de kop van de Geldersekade, aan de noordzijde van de Nieuwmarkt, werd na 1840 een vismarkt aangelegd ter vervanging van de vismarkt op de Dam. Die laatste moest wijken voor de Beurs van Zocher. De steiger en houten loodsen op de Nieuwmarkt werden in 1862 vervangen door de stenen Gemeentelijke Vischhal, die in december 1938 en januari 1939 is afgebroken: het gebouw belemmerde het uitzicht op het Waaggebouw van de zijde van de Geldersekade en de Prins Hendrikkade en het gebouw werd bestempeld als zijnde lelijk en als zijnde een gedrocht. THE FIGHTING LADY is one of the great documentaries to emerge from WWII. Shot in 1944, this documentary was produced by the U.S. Navy, directed by famed photographer Edward Steichen and narrated by Lt. Robert Taylor USNR. The plot of the film revolves around the life of seamen on board an anonymous aircraft carrier. Because of war time restrictions, the name of the aircraft carrier was disguised as "the Fighting Lady", although she was later identified as the Essex class USS Yorktown CV-10. ("Fighting Lady" was the known moniker of the Yorktown, just as "Lady Lex" for Lexington, "The Big E" for Enterprise, etc...) A few shots of aircraft landing were filmed aboard the Yorktown's sister ship USS Ticonderoga. Frequently mentioned is the adage that war is 99% waiting. The first half or so of the film is taken up with examining the mundane details of life on board the aircraft carrier as she sails through the Panama Canal and into the Pacific Ocean, finally seeing action at Marcus Island (attacked in 1943). It opens with the information that the Chevy Blazer was more popular than any other sport sized utility vehicle. Another name for the Blazer was the GMC Jimmy and these were produced during the model years of 1973 to 1991. Standard features on all four-wheel drive models included reversed arch tapered leaf springs, a rugged stabilizer bar (:29), rod calibrated shock absorbers (:38), and fade resisting power front brakes (:43). They were all designed with steel frames (:46) with alligator jaw type cross members (:49). Other features included counter angled rear shocks (:59), rear brakes with bin drums (1:03), and brake lines that were now wrapped in exposed areas (1:07). This silent promotional film for the F-100 Super Sabre was made by North American Aviation, and likely shown to members of the Department of Defense and Congress. There are two parts to the film. The first, starting at 7 seconds through 5:30, shows a bare metal aircraft being put through its paces. Beginning at 5:39 the aircraft is shown in Southeast Asia in combat operations during the Vietnam War. At 5:49, tail #0-52964 and a wingman take off. Various other take-off shots. At 6:39 F-100s drop bomb loads. At 7:19, a napalm drop is seen with an enormous fireball resulting. At 7:42, cannon fire and strafing of ground targets. At 10:18, slow motion shots of bombs dropping from F-100s. At 12:06, what appears to be chaff or possibly cluster bombs is dispersed from the aircraft. At 13:06, sunset shots as the aircraft return to base. Created for the U.S. Navy by the Treasury Dept. as part of the 6th War Loan drive, PHOTOGRAPHY FIGHTS is a docudrama that showcases the role of a naval photographic interpretation team in theater. The film begins and ends with a "typical" American couple who openly doubt the value of photography in the war, and then shows an interpretation team working on the front lines at Guadalcanal in the Pacific. An aerial photograph is analyzed to reveal that Japanese troops are constructing an air strip on an adjacent island at Munda. The film then suggests the destruction of the strip by showing scenes of aerial and naval bombardment. The film (according to a 1944 guide) "shows how under enemy action photographic crews work precious minutes getting and scanning pictures to search for signs of enemy emplacements and evidence of his movements.
