👀 Elon Musk recently announced a new research direction for his company, Neuralink, focused on developing an implant named Blindsight

This implant is designed to restore visual functions, including the ability to provide sight to people who have been blind since birth. Initially, the quality of the provided image will be comparable to pixel graphics, similar to those used in early Nintendo gaming systems. However, it is expected that over time, the technology will be able to provide a quality of vision that surpasses natural human abilities.

🧠 Neuralink, already known for its contribution to developing neural interfaces, has successfully implanted a brain implant named Telepathy in a human. This implant allowed a paralyzed patient to control external devices with their mind, specifically to play online chess. The Blindsight project expands Neuralink's research activities in the neurotechnology field, aiming to improve people's quality of life by implementing advanced technological solutions.

🗣Raison financial analyst's key insights

Powell's rhetoric was moderately dovish, “without surprises,” and essentially no different from the January press conference. First, it's worth noting that the Fed does not see a significant increase in inflationary risks based on the latest CPI data. Powell confirmed the likelihood of a reversal in monetary policy in 2024 but again did not specify any particular timelines (this was question #1 for markets). The Fed's forecasts suggest three rate cuts this year by 0.75% to 4.50-4.75%. This level matches market expectations for the end of 2024, while the FedWatch tool indicates the beginning of the rate cut at the June meeting (chart below).

Nothing specific was said regarding the start and pace of balance sheet reduction (QT). However, this process will likely be initiated soon. Since June 2023, the market value of US Treasury debt has increased by more than $2 trillion. The US Treasury's appetite was primarily covered by reverse repo liquidity, which has decreased by 77% from $2.16 trillion to $0.496 trillion. If the borrowing pace continues, this resource will be depleted around the middle of the year. A likely gap in demand and supply will force the Fed to roll back the quantitative tightening (QT) program. Based on this, the regulator can expect to make certain statements at the next FOMC meeting.

Market reaction to the FOMC meeting results:

🟠The SP500 rose by 1.5% and reached another all-time high of 5315.75;

🟠Futures on long-term Treasury bonds rose by 0.4%;

🟠The dollar index fell by 0.36%;

🟠The strongest reaction was in gold. GS futures surged by 3.03% at one point - such a reaction to a safe-haven asset may indicate worsening market expectations regarding an "economic soft landing."

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's press conference main points:

🟠The Committee observes progress in reducing inflation, but the final result still needs to be guaranteed. Recent inflation data were slightly above expectations;

🟠The rate is at its peak in the current cycle and will likely be lowered later this year, but decisions will depend on incoming data. The focus for further rate actions shifts to the labor market — a significant weakening in the labor market would signal the start of a rate decrease, and conversely, high hiring rates could delay the beginning of the rate decrease;

🟠The Committee began discussing slowing the pace of balance sheet reduction, but there is no specific timing for the start of this process yet;

🟠Risks to achieving the Fed's goals are gradually becoming more balanced.👇

🔼On Wednesday, the second Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on monetary policy of the year took place. The main points are as follows:

🟠The Committee kept the rate at the current level of 5.25-5.50%;

🟠The Committee will continue to reduce the balance sheet according to previously announced plans ($95 billion per month);

🟠The Federal Reserve notes economic activity is expanding at a confident pace.

🟠Job growth is slowing, but the unemployment rate remains low. Inflation over the past year has decreased but remains high.

The Fed's updated forecasts for 2024:

🟠GDP forecast raised from 1.4% to 2.1%;

🟠Unemployment forecast lowered to 4.0% from 4.1%;

🟠For core PCE (consumer spending), the regulator expects growth to 2.6% from 2.4%;

🟠The forecast for the ERFF rate level in 2024 remains unchanged at 4.6% but was raised for 2025 and 2026 from 3.6% to 3.9% and from 2.9% to 3.1%, respectively. 👇

📊 Corporate bonds

Corporate bonds — are debt instruments issued by companies to finance their operations and projects. Investors purchasing these bonds borrow funds from the issuing company. In response, the company regularly pays interest and returns the original amount of the debt at the end of its term. These instruments are taxable and have a maturity of one year or more.

▪️Risks and returns: Compared to government bonds, corporate bonds carry more risk. However, this risk is rewarded with higher interest rates, offering investors the potential to increase returns.

▪️Risk assessment and payment priorities: Corporate bonds depend on the financial condition of the company that issues them, which makes credit ratings a key factor in assessing their risk.

In case of default, bondholders have priority over shareholders in receiving payments from the company's assets.

▪️Growth and development: These instruments are an important source of capital, opening up wide opportunities for enterprises to grow and develop.

The main goal is to raise funds to support and develop the company's activities. The collateral for the bonds is the future profit expected from operating activities, mergers, acquisitions, or business expansion.

▪️Portfolio diversification: Expanding the portfolio with bonds from different companies reduces risks and contributes to income growth. These investments promise steady returns with less volatility than stocks, highlighting them as the preferred option for many investors.

▪️Anduril

Anduril was selected as one of five suppliers to develop Combined Combat Aircraft (CCA), a flagship program of the Air Force. Details of the contracts are not disclosed. Last year, Anduril acquired Blue Force Technologies, which developed the advanced unmanned aircraft Fury. Anduril also produces Lattice, which the company describes as an “AI-supported software platform that allows teams to collaborate to accomplish complex tasks dynamically.” This could also be significant for the CCA program.

▪️Neuralink

Elon Musk reported the successful implantation of a chip in the first human. The patient with the implanted chip is “recovering well,” the entrepreneur noted. He said the first results showed “promising detection of neural spikes.” The implant allows the person to control digital devices with their mind. According to Reuters, Neuralink's valuation reached $5 billion in early June 2023. This valuation is based on Neuralink's private deals in recent months before the company announced that U.S. regulators approved testing of its technology on humans.

▪️Chainalysis

Omesh Agam has joined the company as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). He will lead the company's global security team, including developing security systems, operations, and compliance. 🔔 Yesterday marked the first FED meeting of the year in the United States regarding monetary policy

As the market expected, the Committee decided to keep the interest rate unchanged in the 5.25-5.5% range and continue reducing the stock of valuable papers.

Powell's rhetoric was moderately “dovish” at the press conference, without any aggression. The main narrative of the speech: the interest rate is likely at its peak in this tightening cycle, and if the economy develops as expected, the FRS could move to lower the rate.

However, Powell repeatedly emphasized that the Committee needs more confidence that inflation is steadily approaching 2%. As of today, almost every committee member deems it appropriate to lower rates this year, but starting to lower rates in March is not the base scenario. A new point appeared in the rhetoric: the Committee plans to begin an in-depth discussion of balance issues at the next meeting in March. This fact hints at a possible winding down of QT in the medium term. Powell's rhetoric on inflation expectations has noticeably changed.

“There are good inflation data for six months, and more is expected. If inflation unexpectedly rises, the Committee will react, but at this stage, it would be a surprise.”

If outstanding inflation data are received shortly, the FRS might start acting sooner and move faster.

“Stronger economic growth is now not seen as a problem by the Committee.”

This thesis reinforces the “dovish” rhetoric, the opposite of the rhetoric throughout the entire monetary policy tightening cycle. Of course, Powell clarified there is still a long way to go before a “soft landing,” and the FRS is not declaring victory yet.

According to Fed Watch, at the end of the day, expectations of a rate cut continued to shift from March to May.
