And they believed that they had some differences in those aspects with vegetarians, so they found a new group and coined the term vegan in 1944 in order to establish a new Society. Vegans are individuals who not only choose to ignore eating any kind of meat but also avoid eating other animal products such as dairy, eggs, and even honey for either moral, health, environmental reason or even a combination of these three reasons. Instead they eat different plant foods, including fruits, vegetables whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and product made from these foods.
In fact, veganism is not a new concept, but it has recently received a lot of public attention as googling the term " vegan" has risen by more than 250 % over the last 5 years. Moreover, a number of world famous celebrities have gone vegan in the last couple of years, and a growing number of vegan products have appeared in stores.
Ethical vegans strongly believe that humans should respect all creatures and they have the right to life and freedom. Therefore, they oppose ending a creature's life simply to consume its flesh, drink its milk or wear its skin, especially because other options are available. This group of vegans are also opposed to the psychological and physical stress that animals may experience as a result of modern farming practices. So, their major concern is animal freedom and right to life.
Meanwhile, some choose veganism for its potential health effects. For example, some vegans are interested in how plant_ based diets may reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer or premature death.
Dietary vegans avoid eating meat, eggs and dairy to improve health, prolong life, lose weight or lower disease risk.
Yet, some other people may also choose to avoid meat and other animal products because of the environmental impact of animal agriculture. Research shows that these products generally require more resources and cause higher greenhouse emissions than plant based options. So, these vegans are concerned with reducing human impact on natural environment.
Vegans want to free animals from human exploitation and prevent cruelty to them. So they even avoid using any kind of clothing such as fur coats or leather boots that might represent cruelty to animals.
