Webinar announcement: What We Say and How We Say It Matter: Teacher Talk that Improves Student Learning and Behavior

Have you ever said to a student, "I love the way you're working so hard!"? How about, "Here are the three things I'll be looking for in this next piece of work,"? Or perhaps you've said, "If you all work really hard for the next 30 minutes, we'll do something fun at the end of class!" You probably have—we all have. Even though these statements (among many others) are used with the best of intentions, they might actually lead students to disengage and learn less.

As educators, we all end up talking with students in ways that don't actually align with our best intentions and positive goals for them.

In this webinar with Mike Anderson, author of What We Say and How We Say It Matter: Teacher Talk That Improves Student Learning and Behavior, you'll learn about several common language habits and patterns that many educators find themselves in and have a chance to explore better alternatives. You'll also learn about a process for changing language habits so that your language better aligns with your best intentions and positive goals for students.

Happy New Year, dear SuperTeachers!

Hey, SuperTeachers!

Happy New Year! 🎄

How was your 2018? What was your biggest achievement/fail of the year? What are your plans for the upcoming 2019? Let's discuss this in the chat!

For those of you who don't want 2019 to be the same as 2018, here's a quote from one of my favorite authors, Rafe Esquith.

Dear SuperTeachers!

As we are preparing the materials for Season 3, I am once again asking you to give me your feedback about Season 2. Please spend a couple of your precious minutes and let me know what you think of Season 2 and what you would like to see added/removed/changed in Season 3. Thank you in advance!

Yours, @imangaliyev

Wright's Law: A Unique Teacher Imparts Real Life Lessons

Dear SuperTeachers, I am sure most of you have seen this video before, but still, I would like to share it with those who haven't.
Whenever I feel down, I just watch this 10-minute documentary. I hope you like it too.

Dear SuperTeachers, here's some food for thought: Too Many Structured Activities May Hinder Children's Executive Functioning

Do your students highlight texts when studying? Some studies say the shouldn't. Here's why:

Students Shouldn't Rely on Highlighting Text
A common studying technique--highlighting text--can make students develop a false sense of mastery.

Season 2, Final Task
Title: Your Chapter

Dear Superteacher, here we are - the end of Season 2!
This is your final task. It is actually the same as the final task of Season 1 - think of your own chapter/article, write your reflection about teaching, education, students etc. Do your best, I'm still seriously thinking that out of the best essays we could publish a book one day!

Acknowledgements:
I would like to thank all the SuperTeachers who helped me during Season 2, particularly:

Banu Ibragim - @banu_ibragim
Baluza Pirmantay
Aidana Ramazanova - @aidanara

for their help with the audio versions of the articles. And special thanks go to Ayash Myrzabekova (@Ayash_M) for all 10 practice tasks we did this season.

If you wish to join the team of contributors for the next season, please feel free to contact me: @imangaliyev

Stay tuned, we are planning some extra treats for you before Season 3. Enjoy your holidays!

Season 2, Practice Task 10
Title: Three Against One

Students can find it difficult to criticize their teacher. And for the person receiving feedback (the teacher, in this case), “suggestions” are easier to act on than criticisms.

Sometimes we are in the “blind spot” and our students’ ideas can be a great help. Also you will definitely be surprised and happy to receive warm words and compliments on your work.

Do this activity to learn more about how you can improve your teaching.

Season 2, Practice Task 9
Title: Idea Notebook

Ideas are like birds – if we do not write them, they just fly away. Especially in the Information era when we are happy to have a lot of content but the problem is that 95 % of it seems useless. A good idea is to keep your own Idea Notebook – simple and obvious way to be more creative.

Follow the instructions and create your own collection of ideas. Feel free to share some snapshots of your ideas with others in the chat.
