Several “pacifying” or “deterrent” brigades of 25,000 to 30,000 troops are the latest version of the European peacekeeping plan for Ukraine, The Washington Post reports.

These forces will not be deployed directly on the front lines but will remain on standby to demonstrate force in case of renewed Russian aggression. They will also be able to quickly receive reinforcements from outside Ukraine if needed.

France has taken the lead in military planning and estimates it can send nearly 10,000 troops. Other European allies remain more cautious or face resource limitations, two sources told the publication.

The previous evening, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his readiness to send British troops to Ukraine. His statement is increasing pressure on other European leaders to make similar commitments.

Starmer emphasized that he did not take the decision lightly but said: “Any role in ensuring the security of Ukraine is a contribution to the security of our continent.”

France and the UK, as Europe’s only nuclear powers, are at the forefront of these discussions. At least a dozen countries are involved, including Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, and the Nordic and Baltic states.
