to be in school vs to be at school (разные точки зрения):

1.1 https://youtu.be/mrdCj3gFdUg?si=BQLVSLvcXZKgjzDP
in school - someone is a student
at school - about location

1.2 https://youtu.be/zhtt7RWW1hQ?si=V2dcpaBvrSXRQ66_
in school - currently studying in general
at school - physically, inside the school

1.3 https://langeek.co/en/grammar/course/576/in-at-school

"in school" often refers to the time when someone is actively attending classes and studying as a student. It can also mean the period of time when someone is enrolled in a specific academic program or institution.

"at school" often refers to the physical location of a school, or to a more general idea of being present in a school environment

То есть эти два видео и статья говорят о том, что in school - это про то, что человек в целом учится в школе, а at school - физически в школе, речь про локацию.

* Уточню, что в американском английском school можно назвать не только школу, а ещё колледж и университет.

2. Словарь Longman Dictionary:
https://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/in-school in school:
1) in the school building
2) (American English) attending a school or university rather than having a job

https://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/at-school at school:
1) in the school building
2) (British English) attending a school, rather than being at college or university or having a job

То есть и in school, и at school можно сказать, говоря про здание школы. Но, если говорим про то, что человек учится в целом, то в британском это будет at school, a в американском in school.

3. https://jmarian.com/en/10028-at-school-vs-in-school-in-english
Статья гласит, что нет чётких гайдов по различию in school/at school, потому что эти термины используются по-разному даже внутри американского и британского английского. Но основные тренды следующие (также используется формулировка "для большинства американцев" в разделе статьи про AmE):

He's still in school:
AmE: He's still a student
BrE: He still hasn't come back from school today

He's still at school:
AmE: He still hasn't come back from school today
BrE: either he's still a student or he still hasn't come back from school

Статья рекомендуют придерживаться американского варианта, который поймут и в США, и в Соединённом Королевстве, но рекомендуют избегать использование in school для обозначения учеников колледжа, так как британцы неправильно поймут. Лучше in college, at university. Причина в том, что в британском school - это школа, а в США school могут назвать не только школу, но ещё колледж и также университет.

4. https://grammarhow.com/at-school-or-in-school/
Эта статья даёт нам информацию, что "in school" implies the person is within the actual school building (as opposed to just being somewhere on the school grounds); "at school" indicates that a person is currently anywhere within the designated "grounds" of the school.
То есть фактически, если Вы во дворе школы, то Вы at school, но не in school. А, если в здании, то и в in school, и в at school.

Также статья и про in school, и про at school говорит, что их можно использовать in a general sense are attending (or have attended) the educational institution to which you're referring.

Мой вывод

Третья статья полнее раскрывает идею первых трёх источников (1.1, 1.2 и 1.3), но она не охватила словарное использование (источник 2 - Longman Dictionary) in school в значении "in the school building". Предполагаю, что такое значение возможно, но оно не частое.

Adjectives can be divided into gradable and non-gradable. Gradable adjectives (e.g. difficult, important, happy, tired) are words for qualities that exist in different degrees. Things can be more or less difficult or important; people can be more or less happy or tired. Non-gradable adjectives (e.g. impossible, essential, alive, exhausted) are words for ‘either-or’ qualities. We don’t generally say that some things are more impossible than others, or that somebody is not very exhausted: things are either impossible or not, and people are either exhausted or not.
Degree adverbs like very or more are mostly used with gradable adjectives, and it is mainly gradable adjectives that have comparative and superlative forms.
