Jack Daniel's Manufacturer Slams Canada’s Removal of US Alcohol ProductsBrown-Forman, the company behind Jack Daniel's, has sharply criticized Canada's decision to pull US-made alcohol from shelves in retaliation for the US tariffs on Canadian goods.
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), one of the largest alcohol buyers globally, began removing US alcohol products this week. Lawson Whiting, the CEO of Brown-Forman, called Canada’s response “disproportionate” to the 25% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian goods, describing it as "worse than a tariff" because it directly removes US products from the market.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed that the LCBO sells nearly $1 billion worth of US alcohol annually. This action has led to a halt in the sale of US alcoholic beverages in the province, affecting local retailers and restaurants. Despite this, Whiting emphasized that Canada represents only 1% of Brown-Forman’s sales, allowing the company to withstand the hit.
In retaliation, Canada has imposed 25% levies on US goods, including beer, spirits, and wine. Meanwhile, the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, criticized the US tariffs, calling them "a very dumb thing to do," while also accusing President Trump of trying to destabilize the Canadian economy.
