Today in Welsh history... 25 December 1914, the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers were involved in one of the most moving events of any conflict, whilst fighting in Northern France during World War I.

Private Frank Richards from Blaina recalled how two men put up a board, with ‘Merry Christmas’ written on it and then climbed up the trench with their hands up. Two German soldiers did likewise, and the two pairs of soldiers then walked into no-man’s land and shook hands. Soldiers from both sides put down their arms and joined them, exchanging gifts such as beer, cigarettes, plum puddings and chocolate. They then sang carols and organised a football match.

The following morning Capt. Stockwell of the Welsh Fusiliers climbed up the trench and held up a sign with 'Merry Christmas' on it. A German commander then appeared with a sign saying 'Thank You'. Both men saluted each other, fired three shots into the air and then climbed back into their positions and the war recommenced.

Today in Welsh history... 21 December is the Winter Solstice.

The Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere occurs on either December the 21st or 22nd. It is the shortest day and longest night of the year when the sun's daily maximum elevation in the sky is the lowest.

It is speculated that the Celtic Druids observed the winter solstice, as it marks the shortest day and the rebirth of the Sun, when the hours of daylight increase, until the Summer Solstice. It is thought that the Druids would gather by the oldest mistletoe-clad oak, from which the Chief Druid would remove the mistletoe with his golden sickle, to be caught by the other Druids standing below with an open sheet, making sure none of it touched the ground. The early Christian church, in fact, banned the use of mistletoe because of its association with Druids.

Today in Welsh history… 20th December 1912, Sir Morien Bedford Morgan, ‘The Father Of Concorde’ was born in Bridgend. Whilst a student at Cambridge, Morgan became fascinated with aircraft and won the John Bernard Seely prize in aeronautics in 1934. He spent some time at Vickers Aviation as an apprentice, before Morgan took up a position at the Aerodynamics Department within Royal Aircraft Establishment. In 1948 he began researching the possibility of a supersonic passenger airliner, and in 1956 when Chairman of the Supersonic Transport Aircraft Committee, selected the design of what would ultimately become Concorde. Concorde was grounded in 2003 three years after a fatal crash when all passengers and crew were killed. The retirement of the Concorde project is today considered by some as a symptom of the decline of the west.

Today in Welsh history... 13 December 1849, the foundation stone of Llandovery College was laid. The college was founded by surgeon Thomas Phillips in 1847 to cultivate the learning of Welsh literature and history through the medium of Welsh.

Llandovery College was one of the very first teams in Wales to play rugby and were one of the founder clubs of the Welsh Rugby Union in 1881. Two of its players played in Wales' first international game, and Charles Lewis from the college was the second person to captain Wales. Over the years, many well-known internationals attended the college, including Cliff Jones, George North and Alun Wyn Jones.

CALL TO ACTION

Since our post about the petition in Wales yesterday and despite us sharing on many groups and platforms as we are sure many people are doing, this petition has only crept up by a few hundred. Is it being suppressed or manipulated in some way?

It is clearly an important debate so let's all make a concerted effort to sign and share. With the followers on this channel alone, we can more than cover the 3.5k signatures needed. Sign it today.

You DO NOT need to be a Welsh resident to do so. Anyone can sign.

How much is it REALLY costing? It changes every time you read a headline.

Today in Welsh history... 30 November 1199, Gerald of Wales made his first visit to Rome to put forward his case to Pope Innocent III that he be made Bishop for the Diocese of St David's after being overlooked for the post by King John. Gerald also appealed unsuccessfully to the Pope for St David's to be made an Archbishopric independent of Canterbury.

Gerald of Wales also known as Gerallt Gymro or Giraldus Cambrensis, was born at Manorbier Castle in Pembrokeshire, he was of mixed Norman and Welsh descent. His father, William FitzOdo de Barry, was one of the most powerful Anglo-Norman barons in Wales and his mother Angharad was a first cousin of Rhys ap Gruffydd, the Lord Rhys.

Gerald accompanied Baldwin, the Archbishop of Canterbury, on a tour of Wales in 1188. The 'Itinerarium Cambriae' (1191), an account of that journey, and the ' Descriptio Cambriae' (1194) remain valuable historical documents, significant for their descriptions of Welsh and Norman culture.

I realise I haven’t actually put up a post about this, I just replied to somebody in the comments on my channel, so here’s the current situation for anybody who’s interested:

🔹 Sam is due to be released from prison in a few weeks but he won’t be allowed to return home for “at least six months”, potentially up to 12 months.

🔹 He will have to stay at a premises of their choice so that they can monitor him closely because they believe there’s such a high risk of “serious harm”.

🔹 He has to check in there every evening and he can check out on a morning. He can leave through the day and go where he pleases, and his location will be monitored with a GPS tag. He has to check in at the premises every day at midday to ensure he doesn’t travel too far.

🔹 Sam also has other licence conditions that he must stick to for the remainder of his two year sentence. I’ll share them when we get them in writing so that friends and colleagues know what he can and can’t do.

🔹 The most important thing to Sam is his family and this licence condition is particularly harsh as it stops him from doing things like bath time/bedtime story time/putting his children to bed, but at least he can now see them every day, so we are looking forward to that. We can’t really go on day trips because of the midday check in but at least he can begin to build a bond with his baby, and he can see his toddler every day.

🔹 If Sam breaks his licence conditions he will be returned to prison. Once Sam’s two year sentence is over (1st March 2026), he is a free man and he can do whatever he pleases.
