On June 13, 1988, Cassie Holden left home for an afternoon walk. The 12-year-old's body was found two days later in a wooded area where she had been picking flowers. She was beaten to death with a rock after resisting Jonathan Lee Gentry's attempts to rape her.

On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson was on the walkway leading to her home when she was stabbed several times in the head and neck. The cuts to her neck were so violent that her spine and larynx were exposed and visible.

During the trial of Nicole's abusive ex-husband O.J. Simpson, three quarters of American whites believed he was guilty of the attack, while only about 20% of blacks felt this way. (In the years since, the majority of both groups have come to agree on his guilt.) The jury that found the defendant "not guilty" included 9 blacks and only 2 whites. One of the jurors, a former member of the Black Panthers, winked and smiled at O.J. before the verdict was announced. Afterwards, this juror raised his fist in the "Black Power" salute.

O.J. was later found responsible for Nicole's death in a civil lawsuit.

On June 11, 1977, Jane Marie McManus was asleep on her living room couch around 3:00AM when a man, wandering past, saw her through the window. He robbed her. He raped her. He slashed her forehead with a knife. He stabbed her 15 times. He hit her with a hammer and strangled her with a belt. During his taped confession, Harold Otey stated "She was pleading with me to kill her. She said, 'Kill me, kill me.' OK, I figured, I went that far. Why not?"

On June 10, 2017, James Vincent Celani was walking with his cousin in downtown San Diego when he was randomly shot in the head, neck and chest by Arrow Morris, who happened to be passing him on the sidewalk. Lt. Commander Celani was a pilot for the U.S. Navy, just weeks away from retiring.

On June 9, 2004, Emily Ann Clemons was beaten with a hammer and some other household objects. Her assailants struck her over 30 times, and also used the hammer's claw on her face. Emily was 16 years old, as were her murderers, Laisha Landrum and Rocky Almestica Jr.

On June 8, 2004, Edith Wood Blackwell was abducted and stuffed into the trunk of her car, where officials said she died from suffocation and heat stroke.
