3 mistakes that many people make while writing college admission essays

Personally I made these mistakes when I began to prepare for college admission without a mentor, and I am sharing these with you so that you won't repeat them.

1. Too boring topic or content

You need to understand college admission officers read thousands of essays, and you would like to stand out from the crowd. If the reader gets bored in your essay, it might be the end for your application. For example, this happens mainly in Uzbekistan: writing about your family's financial hardships, but still you tried your best and learned English. This can be a great achievement, but this is a common experience many people go through, so writing about a unique topic can take time but is possible.

2. Strong hook, weak body

I have seen in the past when people send me their essays to get feedback, they draw my attention to the essay in the beginning, but then it gets boring. They go back to ordinary. They lose their narrative style because they worked on the hook too much that the body doesn't show a lot of meaningful experience. If this is you, I suggest making a plan for your essay first.

3. Showing less of your personality

After finishing your essay, read it again, and if somebody else could write the same essay as you did, that's the time you screwed up because you lack personal touch and unique perspective in the essay. Not adding emotions, not being able to create a scene by describing, or acting like somebody else might be the reason why.

The Real Impact of SAT, IELTS, and Extracurriculars

The most common question received involves students sharing their SAT and IELTS scores and inquiring about their probability of acceptance. Even admissions officers cannot definitively answer this question, making it less appropriate for students to ask.

The IELTS score reflects language proficiency and does not impact acceptance once it exceeds the benchmark; a score of 7-7.5 or higher is recommended for most universities.

The role of the SAT in admissions is gradually decreasing, but it is advisable for Uzbek students to take the exam due to the low credibility of the Uzbek education system on an international level.
