MACCAS & THEIR 'CRAPPY MEALS' NOT WELCOME IN WANAKA:
There is a bucolic charm about strolling through a small town and not recognising any of the big brands that we are accustomed to seeing in the big city.
Wanaka's growing pains however, are now attracting those big names, who recognise the opportunities associated with being first to the market. And McDonald is one of those brands which are seeking a slice of Central Otago for themselves.
Many locals however, have put up resistance to the golden arches, which are set to be installed on the outskirts of town near the new Three Parks development, where other big brands like The Warehouse have also made themselves at home.
Trailers with signage near the roundabout where Maccas are to set up shop have been parked up in recent times, protesting the move, while Macca enthusiasts have meanwhile plastered their own messaging over the top of the signage.
Meanwhile, a petition has been circulated amongst locals, while a hearing is set to take place with the local council later this month to decide the fate of the fast food franchise, which many believe will affect local businesses and spoil the reputation of the town.
Over 366 submission have been made to the council so far, with only 23 in support of Ronald McDonald, while the petition currently has over 6,000 signatures.
