Brown-Forman Boss Criticizes Canada’s Tariff Response on US AlcoholBrown-Forman, the parent company of Jack Daniel's, has spoken out against Canada’s decision to remove US alcohol products from store shelves in retaliation for US tariffs. The move, executed by several Canadian provinces, including Ontario, follows the 25% levies the Trump administration imposed on Canadian goods.
Lawson Whiting, CEO of Brown-Forman, called the Canadian response "worse than tariffs," pointing out that it was more harmful than the tariffs themselves by effectively wiping out US alcohol sales in Canada. The LCBO, Ontario’s alcohol wholesaler, has pulled US-made drinks off the shelves, significantly impacting retailers and hospitality businesses.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford reported that nearly $1 billion worth of US alcohol is sold annually in the province, and now those products will no longer be available. Although Whiting noted that Canada represents only 1% of the company’s total sales, he acknowledged the impact of the move.
In response to this, Canada has imposed its own 25% tariffs on US goods, including alcoholic beverages, as part of its countermeasures. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Trudeau has sharply criticized the US tariffs, calling them counterproductive.
