Last words of the Italian-Spanish General Ambrosio Spinola

Frederick II (1712-1786) ruled Prussia from 1740 until his death, leading his nation through multiple wars with Austria and its allies. His daring military tactics expanded and consolidated Prussian lands, while his domestic policies transformed his kingdom into a modern state and formidable European power. As an enthusiastic patron of the arts and sciences, a gifted musician and a correspondent with the top minds of the Enlightenment, Frederick sought to embody the Platonic ideal of a “philosopher-king.”

King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. "The Lion of the North"

Gustavus II Adolphus, Sweden’s legendary ‘Lion of the North,’ was a master tactician, a fearsome frontline fighter and a successful nation builder.

A 15th century prophecy averred that a series of disasters would end only when a golden lion emerged from the north to defeat the eagle of devastation. Sweden’s King Gustavus Adolphus, with his flowing blond hair and unfailing courage, won the title “Lion of the North” among his countrymen, his allies and his enemies.

👑 Casimir III the Great reigned as the King of Poland from 1333 to 1370. He inherited a kingdom weakened by war and made it prosperous and wealthy. He reformed the Polish army and doubled the size of the kingdom. He reformed the judicial system and introduced a legal code, gaining the title "the Polish Justinian". He also built extensively and founded the University of Kraków, the oldest Polish university. He also confirmed privileges and protections previously granted to Jews and encouraged them to settle in Poland in great numbers, protected as "people of the king". He is the only king in Polish history to both receive and retain the title of "Great". (painting by Leopold Löffler, 1863)

"To be strong in pain: not wanting what is unattainable or worthless; satisfied with the day as it comes; Seeking the good in everything and enjoying nature and people as they are, comforting yourself with a single hour that is beautiful for 1,000 bitter ones and always giving your best in heart and skill, even if there is no one thanking you. Those who learn and can do that are happy, free and proud, their lives will always be beautiful. Whoever is suspicious commits injustice against others and harms himself, we have the duty to approve of everyone as long as he does not prove the opposite to us. The world is so big and we humans are so small that everything cannot be about us alone. If something hurts and hurts us, who can know if it is necessary to use the whole creation? In every thing in the world, whether dead or breathing, the Great White Will of the almighty and omniscient Creator lives." Wilhelm II
