IS “THE” SEPTUAGINT CORRECT? IS IT EVEN REAL? TWO PART STUDY
PART ONE | PART TWO
When we study the Word of God, whether we come out of a Catholic, Orthodox, Baptist, Protestant or any other “flavor” background of Christianity, we have to be willing to examine tradition and belief in accordance with Scripture. That’s part of examining our own hearts, and of discerning truth in the Holy Spirit.
Probably one of the most fundamental mistakes that I hear, and I myself have spent many years touting it as proud fact, is that the Septuagint (or LXX) is not only older than the Masoretic Text (used in the KJV Bible) but is even QUOTED in the New Testament. This is a misnomer, and one I have to admit I feel very humbled by.
“Well, if it was good enough for Jesus and the apostles it’s good enough for me, right?”
Well, if a text called “THE Septuagint” was even around at the time of Christ (which we don’t have evidence for), He certainly would not have quoted from a linguistic text that was expressly forbidden in the very Hebrew law Jesus knew so well!
That is just one of the many issues, along with the supposed “Letter of Aristeas”, Origen’s “Hexpala”, and a general lack of deep study into the disinformation and speculation that surrounds the legends of the “LXX”
I’ll stop here for now though, because there are others who can and have explained far better than I can in a Telegram post. Check out the two part study linked above, and we can continue some discussion here.
