In 1906, long before the Spanish Civil War broke out, Pius X addressed a letter to the Church of Spain, the contents of which are applicable to American Christians. Those who strive to destroy religion and civil society aim above all at getting control, as far as possible, of the direction of public affairs and at having themselves elected legislators.
