Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican speaker in U.S. history, has died at 84.
Hastert represented Illinois in Congress from 1987 to 2007 and served as House speaker from 1999 to 2007.
In 2015, he pleaded guilty to illegally structuring cash withdrawals to conceal hush-money payments to a former student who accused him of sexual abuse.
He was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2016, when a federal judge called him a “serial child molester.”
