⚖️ CLARITY Act gets its ethics section - president banned, his kids aren't

On July 22, an updated CLARITY Act reached the Senate floor - the first version to include explicit ethics restrictions for federal officials. The ban is real. So is the gap.

Trump reported more than $1.2B in crypto income - the number that put Democrats on a hard-restrictions footing throughout the entire negotiation.

1️⃣ What the ethics section actually restricts

The president, VP, and other federal officials cannot issue, promote, or sponsor digital assets. Three things the market has already read closely:

🟢 The ban is temporary - expires automatically in 2029, no vote required
🟢 Trump's children - Don Jr., Eric, and Barron, who run WLFI - fall outside the restriction
🟢 Enforcement is still disputed: DOJ (Republican) vs. state attorneys general (Democratic)

2️⃣ Why Wall Street and the Senate are saying the same thing

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon publicly backed the CLARITY Act on July 23 - arguing the industry cannot operate without coherent rules. He disclosed a personal Bitcoin position and aligned with the Treasury's stance.

Senator Cynthia Lummis put the bill's core case in concrete terms: protecting client assets when platforms collapse.

💭 Cynthia Lummis, U.S. Senator:

"The collapse of Terra destroyed around $40 billion, and what remained was consumed by the bankruptcy process itself. CLARITY Act doesn't just draw a line between reserve-backed assets and algorithmic experiments. It guarantees that when something collapses - client assets will be protected."

Lummis also cited Celsius and Voyager - in both cases, client funds were commingled with corporate assets and vanished into the process.

✨ The deadline is August 7, 2026 - the Senate's last day before the summer recess. If the bill doesn't pass, everything moves to fall.

The carve-out for Trump's children doesn't read as a drafting oversight. WLFI continues operating without restrictions regardless of how the final text lands.

Solomon and Lummis are delivering the same message: the industry wants rules. Trump agreed - formally. The real test of that agreement is August 7.
