What happens when a validator messes up? (And why it is your money)
Last post - what a validator does. Now the flip side: what happens when it fails π
Two things can go wrong:
π΄ Downtime. If a validator goes offline and misses too large a share of its slashing window, it gets jailed and its stake is cut. The size of the cut and the window itself are set by the network.
π΄ Double-signing. When a single private key signs the same block twice (classic case - running one key on two validators), the network slashes the stake and permanently retires that key (tombstone).
Both of these are slashing: the network takes a cut of the staked tokens. And it hits every delegator, not just the operator.
π΄ The exact percentages and slashing window differ from chain to chain - some softer, some harsher, up to permanent removal from the set.
π΄ For example, on Cosmos SDK a double-sign slashes ~5% of the stake by default - but each network sets its own rate.
This is what people mean by "pick a good validator." Not a nice brand, but whether the operator stays online and never gets slashed. Their discipline literally protects your principal.
