What should not be added to compost?
▫️ Diseased plants. The pathogens contained in them are not destroyed by decomposition.
▫️ Dry leaves from the current season. They decompose more slowly. It is better to collect them in a separate pile or in a black polyethylene bag with holes for ventilation.
▫️ Seed weeds and perennial rhizomatous plants.
▫️ Waste with residues of poisons, herbicides and pesticides. These substances destroy beneficial microorganisms.
▫️ Food waste of animal origin and large bones. They take a long time to decompose and cause unpleasant odors.
▫️ Citrus peels. Long rotting and harmful to earthworms and beneficial microflora.
▫️ Poisonous plants. Foxglove, tomato and potato haulm, clover, crabgrass, lily of the valley, aconite contain toxic substances that slow down the decomposition process, killing microorganisms involved in the maturation of the compost.
