In the end, a plan is still a plan, right? And the home, was never truly ours to keep.

You did. You wrote it with me—beside me. We wrote the seven-year plan, as if the act of writing them would make them inevitable. We painted walls and filled the rooms with promises, as if they could hold time still for us. We left pieces of ourselves in every corner, as if they would be enough to keep the place whole. We shared our dreams, as if speaking them aloud would turn them into something tangible. And though we tried to hold onto them, we could not keep the walls from crumbling.

Seven years from now feels far away, but I know how I want to spend them. Would you let me read it to you?

A body of wheat rises. Oh, it tears! Gas pockets collapse. Flesh swells with sugar. Red stains pale. Capillaries of juice braid through the porous sponge. Digestion begins before the first bite. Enzymes awaken. Teeth sink through. The strawberry surrenders. The bread consumes. What was separate becomes one. Hunger? Ever-demanding! We are swallowed by it. There is nothing left but satisfaction. But nothing ever really lasts, does it? The hunger knocks at the door again. Oh, human... What a life eaten away by hunger! Oscar Wilde, you knew the truth. Dorian Gray, we share your curse. Pleasure is very different from happiness. So, why do we chase pleasure instead of happiness? Is it the art of hunger? Always starving. Never satisfied. Never enough. But what if, for once, we woke up satisfied? Would we call it peace, or would we call it emptiness? Would we rest, or would we rot? Trapped. Devoured. Reborn. Tell me, why must the cycle begin again?

I lift my hands to the pyre. I feed the fire. I feed the dream. I bare my teeth. I bite down. Does is taste of gold. Or of rot? Ha! What does it matter? Let them call it folly! I will rip the lifeblood from their bones as they did mine. I will take the scraps from their table. I will write my name into their kingdom. I will build my own. Even if my corpse is the last thing left to claim it!

Oh, Fortuna. Just one more prayer. Let the coin spin once more. Let the string pull taut. Let the bait swing just beyond my reach. I lunge. I grasp. I burn. And still, I tell myself; this time, I will not let go! This time, I will take what is mine. This time, I will not be the one left kneeling.

Fortuna watches. Oh! Do you see me now? I kneel before a torn heaven, and you sit idle. You spin your wheel, and I spin mine. My prayers burn before they leave my tongue. My palms split. My fingers curl. Nothing holy left to hold. Nothing! Nothing... Nothing left to protect...

I crushed bones to pulp for their feast. Ground them beneath my heel. Spun the wheel. Hands black with grease, red with blood. And when I turned back, they were gone. Their voices swallowed by the machine. I knelt at their font. They... they filled my mouth with molten lead. Drink, they said. This is the price! This is the cost of ambition and wanting for more!

They placed laurels on my head. A garland of conquest. A noose spun from debts unpaid. A crown, they said. A crown! As if it did not tighten with every step. Shackles dressed in gold. Chains hidden beneath cloth and silk. They built their kingdom on the backs of men like me. They wrote their laws into my ribs. They took my prayers. How wretched they are to called it tribute! And I gave it freely. Like fools! Like zealots! I turned my hands to the wheel and watched it grind my eden into nothing.

YOU BLOOM, AND I FREEZE.

You promise me light, but I am the night. You offer me spring, but I am the frost that devours it. You long for color, but I am the white that covers all in silence and cold.

I want to cage you within this frostbitten embrace where the world cannot reach you. Where the bloom of spring cannot tempt you. Where you are mine... and only mine. Yet, you were never meant to stay in winter's hold. You are bound to the eternal dance of growth and rebirth. You are the delicate bloom of spring's first thaw. And I am the death that follows. You burn so brightly. I want to be your flame. Yet, I am the frost that cracks your edges. That is why some stories must remain unfinished. No final chapter. No resolution.

To hold you. To possess you. To claim you. I want you frozen in endless. I want you encased in my grasp. I want to seal you in this season forever. But you... oh, you are not made for this. You love the spring, don't you? The warmth of the sun. The tender embrace of the wind. The endless petals reaching toward the skies. And me? I am winter. Harsh. Implacable. Devastating. I am the frozen breath of the earth's slumber. You despise the silence I create. You yearn to escape its hold.

Fall down with me, lover. Fall into this crevasse we've carved from our hunger. Let your hands bury me as it pleases you. I crave the feel of your touch. I yearn for the pressure of your grasp. I want to feel your breath hasten. I want to hear it shatter like a shattered pane between us. We love each other, don't we? We do. But that's the cruelest truth. So consuming. So unbending. This will never be enough... It was never meant to be enough, lover.

YOU LOVE SPRING, YET I AM WINTER.
