New York City is set to implement a congestion pricing system starting January 5, 2025, to reduce traffic congestion and improve transportation infrastructure. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that drivers entering Manhattan below 60th Street will face a fee of $9 during peak daytime hours.
Key details of the plan include:
⏺Daytime fees (5 AM–9 PM): $9 for passenger cars.
⏺Nighttime fees (9 PM–5 AM): $2.25, reflecting a 75% discount for off-peak hours.
⏺Motorcycles: $4.50.
⏺Small trucks and buses: $14.40.
⏺Large trucks and tour buses: $21.60.
⏺Ride-share drivers (Uber, Lyft, etc.): $1.50 per trip.
⏺Taxi drivers: $0.75 per trip.
Drivers earning less than $50,000 annually will receive a 50% discount after their first 10 trips each month. Emergency vehicles, city service vehicles, and public buses will be exempt.
Revenue from the initiative will fund infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to the subway system and the introduction of new electric buses. Drivers without E-ZPass will receive toll bills by mail, with additional charges to be determined.
