Maurice Papon is one of my favorite figures from French history. He was a high-ranking police officer in Vichy France, during which he participated in the rounding-up and deportation of over 1600 jews.
He continued on as a police officer after the war. In 1961, he oversaw the drowning of dozens of Algerians in the Seine.
