They're ugly. They know that they don't have any hope of ever meeting traditional beauty standards. It makes them hateful toward beauty, and resentful of beautiful people. It also forces them into a choice:

A lifetime of trying, and failing, to meet the standard?
Or go "all in" in the opposite direction, purposely MAKING themselves as ugly as possible, so that their unattractiveness isn't some unfortunate reality nature and genetics have forced on them, but a CHOICE they've made.

They think it gives them their "power" back.

It doesn't. It just makes them uglier. Inside and out.
